There have been some missteps in the past (nobody says “rap-rock” with a straight face anymore), but the good outweighs the bad now. Enter Yoni Wolf and his merry band of minstrels, who played at Union Transfer on Monday night. While primarily a Wolf project, it’s a gleeful combination of indie-rock band in the background, with the eccentric rapper leading the way as ringleader.

Always upbeat, even if the coded wordplay is not, Wolf is an artist that ...

WHY photo by Liz Wolf

Yoni Wolf is something of an anomaly in music. Part hip-hop impresario, part indie-rock connoisseur, all business man. While most labels try to find the next big thing that fits the zeitgeist, Anticon just kind of hangs out, not looking to buck trends or start them, but simply to create. Why?

WHY? indeed. Within the question, lies ...

WHY?‘s latest album, Mumps, etc., is almost two years old now, so it’s a bit surprising to see a new video coming from it, but that’s certainly not a complaint. Check out the humorous new clip for “Jonathan’s Hope” above.

WHY? will play at Union Transfer on Monday, September 22 with Dessa and Philly’s Grimace Federation. Tickets are available here.
