Video of The Day #390: NVDES

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

As far as I’m concerned, NVDES can do no wrong. The Josh Ocean-led project has just unleashed their newest EP, Vol. 2, and from that group of songs comes the unfairly addictive hip-shaker “Everyday.”

With its throwback, 80s-esque beats and slick lyrics, this one is nigh on impossible to resist. Which, when you get down to it, pretty much makes it just like ...

Video of The Day #389: The Babe Rainbow

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

It’s been (yet another) really shit news day, so I doubt I’m alone in needing a bit of a pick-me-up. All I can say is thank the music-making heavens above for The Babe Rainbow.

Their video for “Monky Disco” is everything I needed to cleanse my mental palate: crazy wonderful dance moves, saturated 70s colors, and a psychedelic dance party song with a ...

Video of The Day #388: Methyl Ethel

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Lately I am constantly finding my day invaded by Methyl Ethel‘s “Ubu” popping into my head – which isn’t a bad thing, mind you. It’s one of my favorite songs of the entire year, hands down. Hence, since I’m pretty much obsessed with this particular song, I thought I’d do my best to make sure you were, too.

The song’s video is oooh-missus ...

Video of The Day #387: Line & Circle

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

It’s not everyday you see a video starring Socrates (or a dude dressed up in Socratic finery). But Line & Circle‘s video for “Vicious Folly” goes all out in Ancient Rome, robes, ruins and all.

Don’t be fooled by the impeccable jangling dreaminess of the song, mind you. According to the band, the inspiration for the Vicious Folly EP is down to the ...

Video of The Day #386: Duncan Lloyd

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

I very recently had the pleasure of seeing Duncan Lloyd perform with his band Maximo Park, which is always a highly-recommended endeavor.

So too is checking out this video for Lloyd’s “Painters,” from his 2017 solo record I O U O M E. While Lloyd’s brand of lovely, warm lo-fi pop streams along in golden waves, the video highlights artists at work. The ...

Video of The Day #385: Airpark

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Snakes, spiders, and (fencing) swords. You’ll see all of the above in Airpark‘s heavily 70s-inspired video for “Le Tigre.” Feeling both roughly jagged and elegantly indulgent, the Nashville duo’s sound is certainly no retiring violet.

And, to quote the song, “I don’t see it as a problem.”

Video of The Day #384: Adam Ostrar

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Adam Ostrar‘s “Warlock” is a quiet stunner, a song that isn’t in your face but one that demands attention all the same. With the same tender thoughtfulness that hallmarks artists like Cat Stevens and Tim Buckley, Ostrar’s song is quietly magnetic. The video picks up on the solitude and melancholic mood just so, and both song and video are quite satisfying indeed.

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

It’s been not one of the best weeks ever, if I may put it mildly. But I’ve stumbled upon this particular video, and for three and a half minutes, the week has improved. Witness, friends, a 1991 television appearance by the peerless Primal Scream. Witness the madcap 1990s dance moves. Witness the Flava Flav cameo. Witness one of yours truly’s favorite songs in full ...

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

If push came to shove, Nada Surf‘s magnificent album Let Go would probably make its way onto on a list of my favorite records of all time. “Inside of Love” is a favorite amongst favorites, and this here video for the song really captures the lovelorn slant of the song rather well. The closet romantic in me gets drawn in every time.

Video of The Day #381: Django Django

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Django Djangos video for “In Your Beat” is a purely ridiculous, avant-garde escapist fantasy – and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. With colors and shapes that call to mind Peter Max among others, the video is an unrelenting assault on the eyes, an assault that happens to fit perfectly with the madcap danceability of the song. Not long ...

Video of The Day #380: Suede

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

If you’re not familiar with Suede, stop whatever it is you’re doing and rectify the situation. I mean it. One of the Britpop invasion’s more interesting (and definitely less “pop”) outfits, Suede has been doing their louche, glam-with-a-seedy-underbelly noise for decades. “Stay Together” is a personal favorite, I probably played it every week during my days as a college radio DJ. Video of The Day #379: The Zephyr Bones

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

It may not come as a surprise that Barcelona’s The Zephyr Bones named themselves (partially) for a California surf shop. After all, “Telephone” has a lot of golden seaside sounds coursing through it, along with some seriously daydreamy haze (and a funky little beat to boot). The video keeps it simple, just the band doing what they do (with some nifty effects here and ...

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Caution: You may not want to watch this New Fumes video first thing in the morning. This clip for “Tricked by Rainbows (Smallest Bird Vs. Video of The Day #377: The Bats

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

AllMusic calls The Bats “one of New Zealand’s great treasures,” and you’re not going to hear any disagreement from me. Having just released album number nine The Deep Set on Flying Nun earlier this year, these legends of idyllic, jangling indie pop show they still set the standard. “Busy” is nothing less than a slice of perfection, gently warbling vocals fronting that impossibly lovely lo-fi ...

Alienation, anxiety, and isolation. All three course through the bad dreamscape that is the black and white video for “Softer Now,” the latest video from the excellent Grooms. This New York trio crafts a deceptively velvet sound, bits of clamor cutting through the hazy reverie. Yet another stellar effort from the land of Grooms.

I can’t actually believe it’s been 10 years since the first MGMT record was released. They’re onto number four, now, and “Little Dark Age” is part of the newness. I adore the video, which has a very camp, 1970s Euro horror flick feel. The visual theme fits quite nicely with the song’s spooky, suspicious slow-motion synths. Enjoyable to listen to and look at.

The video for SeRvo‘s “Tree” is the stuff nightmares are made of. Unless, of course, you’re into the idea of being sacrificed at the stake to some unknown deity by mask-clad members of a secret society (or straight up cult). The song itself is a spooky, sinister mess of menacing psych snarl, capable of sending shivers up the spine. The Rouen outfit lays ...

Mondays very often call for sounds as savage and wolfish as “Blood.” Cure your case of the Mondays with SAENTS and this feral, howl-at-the-moon blues rock. The song’s video features a bevy of old footage, tweaked and manipulated to match these bruising sounds.

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

“Strange Side of The Street” is a bit on the dreamy side, with delightful waves of fuzzy, scuzzed-out surf rock jangle capped with a bit of an instrumental freakout at the back end. Video of The Day #370: New Candys

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Coming across like some kind of vintage avant garde film, the video for New Candys‘ “Tempera” may lead to a serious case of visual (not to mention aural) fixation. As the Venetian psychsmiths create foggy, sinister sinews of luxurious noise, the video’s simplicity makes both the song and video somehow feel more intense. Very highly recommended.

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

The trippy, jarringly bright visuals for Helen Kelter Skelter‘s “Guud” make for quite a strong dose. It’s up to you whether you chemically enhance the experience, though you don’t really need to. The song itself is a hulking, heady listen, a far out and fantastical romp through heavy psych with a kick from the OK state.

From Cardiff comes the prismatic, percussion-centric odyssey of Boy Azooga and their dandy “Face Behind Her Cigarette.” The new Heavenly Records signees, led by mastermind Davey Newington, let loose a heck of a racket with this unrelenting fiend of a track. Local legend Ian Svenonius is at it once again, making some serious sonic sturm und drang with his Escape-Ism venture. This is Svenonius flying solo, and in “Walking In The Dark” his ghoulishly catchy, spookily sinuous undulations are peppered with thunderstorm effects for a kooky kick. It’s Veterans Day here in the US, so today’s video pick comes from FL’s favorite vet, Maps & His Mothball Fleet. “A Lot Becomes a Little” is a lovely piece of 90s-infused lo-fi jangle.
