Lame-O Records‘ annual Rock Residency benefit series at Boot & Saddle returns for its third year next month, and WOW would you look at that lineup. A Lame-O event never disappoints, but this year they’ve put together an exceptionally stacked roster of labelmates and friends to take over Boot & Saddle every Thursday in January. And it’s all for a good cause — the proceeds from each show will benefit several local charity organizations.

There are almost too many amazing artists to list, but we’ll list them anyway: The residency kicks off ...

Tonight’s Concert Pick: Katie Jo and The Knobs at Kung Fu Necktie

Katie Jo Knaub | via Bandcamp

Last year, Katie Jo Knaub released her haunting, western-seared album The Widowmaker. Since then, she’s shifted her solo status to the full band, Katie Jo and The Knobs, for some an added dose of twangy kickassery. Catch the band live at Kung Fu Necktie tonight, alongside The Quahogs, Matt Kelly, and Todd Fausnacht. Find more info on the show over at the XPN Concert Calendar, and stream The Widowmaker below.

Philly dream poppers The Morelings make ethereal and soothing psych music that also has a bit of edge. These floaty sounds will swirl about Bourbon and Branch when they play the venue tonight. Find info on tickets at the XPN Concert Calendar, and watch their Key Studio Session below.

How far is heaven, you ask? It’s right here, friend, because Los Lonely Boys are coming to Newtown Theater tonight. I very profusely apologize for the dad joke, but I’m sure the band’s breezy, reggae tunes will wash away all signs of the cringiness I just ...

Home Outgrown Presents: Some Shows, a 3-day DIY fest next week

Three Man Cannon | Photo by Jessica Flynn

Home Outgrown Presents is a Philly DIY promotions group that books some pretty spicy shows. Their latest concoction? A three-day festival packed to the brim with beautifully crunchy basement tunes.

Honestly and descriptively dubbed as “Some Shows: A Fest We Didn’t Know What to Name,” the three-day event gets even better when you take in the stellar fourteen-artist lineup. Three Man Cannon, The Superweaks, and Oso Oso headline each night, while Coping Skills, Caracara, Grayling, Curtis Cooper, and more fill out the bill.

The festival will be taking ...

Hear Harmony Woods’ stripped-down cover of Three Man Cannon’s “Bleed”

Harmony Woods | photo by Emily Dubin | via artist’s Facebook page

Just when we thought Friday was awesome enough on its own, Harmony Woods released a cover of Three Man Cannon’s song “Bleed” on Bandcamp — giving us all new reasons to be thankful.

The cover strips down the TMC slow-jam into a solo acoustic rendition. Switching between bittersweet finger-picking and powerfully-packed strums, Harmony Woods’ take retains the song’s emotion — taking it to a new level of melancholy with its sense of isolation.

Harmony Woods will be playing at Space 1026 on June 16th, and later this summer at the XPN Welcomes: ...

Hear Three Man Cannon’s new song “Forsythia” in their Audiotree Live Session

Three Man Cannon | Photo by Jessica Flynn

While on their recent tour of the Midwest and Southeast, indie rockers Three Man Cannon stopped by Audiotree to film a live studio session that will make you wish the tour was just a bit longer. The Scranton-turned-Philly band is set to release a new record in the near future, the third record following 2014’s Pretty Many People and Will I Know You Then in 2015. The two previous records each have a distinctly different sound; it is anyone’s guess what the upcoming release will sound like, but it is sure to ...

Queen Jesus and Three Man Cannon will hit the road together this month

Queen Jesus | photo courtesy of the artist

Taking advantage of the warming weather, Three Man Cannon and Queen Jesus are heading out on a joint east coast / midwest tour this month. The local bands, who share a member in drummer Pat Brier, will hit Pittsburgh, Bloomington, Asheville and more over the week+ run.

Queen Jesus recently picked up some steam with last year’s Tar Ranch EP, a record that swings between trippy country and indie rock. There’s a haze over the tracks, perhaps a result of the summer heat that hovered around the recording sessions. Three Man Cannon, ...

Lame-O Record’s annual residency at Boot and Saddle ends with a bang, leaving with a headlining set by Three Man Cannon. To be honest, I still can’t believe we got all four members of Three Man Cannon in the studio at the same time.

The Philly-based four piece — vets of the regional punk rock community — are busy, busy dudes. Singer-guitarist-keyboardist Matt Schimelfenig is a studio engineer by day (and night), and seems to always be working on someone or other’s records. Pat Brier drums plays in at least two other bands (8 and Queen Jesus) while Spenser Colmbs can sometimes be seen holding down the low end for Cherry, other times performing solo. As for guitarist Dennis Mishko, I’m not certain, ...

Hear Cayetana’s Augusta Koch cover “Side by Side” by Three Man Cannon

Augusta Koch | Photo by Josh Pelta-Heller | koalafoto.com

Needing a break from working on new Cayetana material, singer-songwriter Augusta Koch recently recorded a quick cover of “Side by Side” by fellow Philadelphians Three Man Cannon, a track taken from the latter’s 2014 LP Pretty Many People.

She carried over the echo-y atmosphere of the original while letting the dreariness of last week’s weather seep into the stripped down recording, sticking to just a guitar and subtle synth for a more somber vibe. There’s a roominess that is both all-encompassing and desolate, like feeling alone in a crowded street.

Catch Cayetana at ...

Watch Three Man Cannon drink the punch in new video for “Coma’d”

Three Man Cannon | photo by Craig Scheihing | courtesy of the artist

For an indie rock band like Three Man Cannon, taking strange journeys seems to be normalcy at this point. Since making the move from Scranton to Philadelphia, the band released their fantastic Pretty Many People, had their gear stolen, and then put out the EP Will I Know You Then on Lame-O Records.

In the music video for the song “Coma’d”, released today, TMC take a new journey into the heart of the woods where they meet a shamanistic cult leader who brings them into his world ...

Little Elephant, a recording studio based in Toledo, Ohio, has been bringing in tons of awesome Philly bands recently, from Restorations to Cayetana, for live sessions in their living room. The latest Philly group to be featured in one of their sessions is the great Three Man Cannon.

The Scranton-via-Philadelphia band joins Little Elephant to perform “Patiently” from their recent LP. Pretty Many People. The song begins as a fragile piece of indie-rock with the band members entering one by one. As the keyboards and vocals ...

This weekend, on February 6th and 7th, Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through series will be livestreaming their new studio session with Philly singer-songwriter Hemming, a.k.a. Candice Martello.

Martello will be joined by members of Cayetana and Three Man Cannon as her backing band to perform a song from her self-titled album that came out last year. The session will be done at Miner Street Recording. For folks who are used to seeing Martello play solo with her electric guitar, this will be a unique experience of seeing her work with a band.

The Lame-O Records Rock Residency at Boot & Saddle continues tonight with a headlining gig from Three Man Cannon. In many ways, these dudes are the glue that holds the Philly DIY scene together.
