Video of The Day: MIEN

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

There are super groups, and there are super groups. With MIEN, the emphasis is most assuredly on super. This foursome features some psych heavyweights, with Alex Maas (The Black Angels), Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone), Tom Furse (The Horrors), and John-Mark Lapham (The Earlies) putting their heads together to collectively make some wonderfully quixotic and seriously exciting noise.

“Black Habit” is the first ...

This week in the basement: essential Cocteau Twins vinyl reissues; a psych rock supergroup featuring members of Black Angels & The Horrors; the California sunshine pop of The Orange Peels; a compilation of obscure ’80s Philly ambient synth trio The Nightcrawlers; and LP#2 from baroque-krautrock trio Lake Ruth.

The Fashionably Late Top 66 of 2017: The Black Angels

The Fashionably Late Top 66 of 2017: The Black Angels

It’s been a hell of a year. 2017 was exhausting, stressful, and at times just plain terrifying. But for all the mess that’s happened over the past 12 months, and there’s certainly been so much, there’s also been a lot of good going on in the world. From a musical standpoint, for instance, 2017 was rather exceptional. There were so many glorious new sounds to take in.

I’ve put together my list of favorites from the year that was, a touch fashionably late as always. Once again, I’ve decided to eschew a ranking system and instead give you an alphabetical ...

On The Road Again: The Black Angels/The Black Lips

Well, well, well. Look who’s taking their show on the road?

Alex Maas of The Black Angels really says it best when it comes to his band linking up with The Black Angels on a tour: “Unlike a lot of things right now, touring with The Black Lips just makes sense.” Having seen both of these bands live, the idea of these two being on the same tour strikes me as one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a rather long time. This “Birds and The Bees Tour” brings together one of psych rock’s finest (and one of the ...

Whither Festivus: Liverpool Psych Fest 2017 Recap

Of all the festivals in all the world, the one I’ve most wanted to go to since I was first made aware of its existence several years ago is Liverpool Psych Fest (official proper name: the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia). After many years of drooling over the lineup and dreaming of being there, this year’s festival finally became my reality. And friends, I’m still glowing in the aftermath of this late September treasure.

It seems only fitting that in a city so often pointed to for its lasting contribution to modern music, a festival of such monumental cool is ...

Listen right after the May edition of Land of the Lost with Robert Drake for a full two-hour show that will definitely feature me breaking a sweat trying to catch you all up on the new music that has come out since we last hung out. Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: The Black Angels

The Black Angels | Photo by Eric Schuman for WXPN

For this latest Indie Rock Hit Parade live session, we’re joined in the studio by The Black Angels. The band has acted both as torchbearers of gloomy, doomy psychedelia as well as cornerstones of their hometown’s experimental music scene. Along with a stellar catalog of albums and EPs, The Black Angels are the head honchos of Levitation, the gathering formerly known as Austin Psych Fest. Armed with a special array of (mostly) acoustic instruments, The Black Angels beamed themselves into our studio to perform selections from their newest album, ...

Video of The Day #267: The Black Angels

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

CAUTION: SERIOUSLY DIZZYING VISUALS. WATCH WITH CAUTION.

A friend of mine recently posted a query on Facebook about what songs we his friends find emblematic of the scary times in which we live. I made a few suggestions, but thinking more about it, I nominate pretty much all of The Black Angels‘ body of work. “Currency,” from new album Death Song, features ...

Good Cover Version: The Black Angels Does The Beach Boys

Good Cover Version: The Black Angels Does The Beach Boys

Pulp gave the world the song “Bad Cover Version.” But seeing as I’m a sonic optimist, I’m of the belief that there’s more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

The mirror cracked from side to side, and what was lurking underneath the broken glass was this Black Angels cover of the Beach Boys classic “Good Vibrations.” The Austin outfit’s masterful psychedelic reworking of the surf pop standard is, of course, coated in a murky, fuzzy haze, with more dead ...
