Petite Sketches, the solo project of Philadelphia’s Tim Straughter, takes small vignettes and sets them to song — as the artist puts it, the project is “a brief unfolding of fleeting musical events accompanied by short lyrical statements.” Tonight Petite Sketches plays The Listening Room in Germantown; it’s an evening of intimate solo performances that also includes Curtis Cooper and Ganou, and all proceeds support activist and political prisoner Leonard Peltier. Field Report – Marigolden
Christopher Porterfield, a.k.a. Field Report, won over our hearts two years ago with his powerful debut album, Field Report. Now he’s back with an evolved sound and a whole new set of heart-tugging lyrics on Marigolden. Musically, a keen eye towards rhythm and the introduction of synthesizers gives Marigolden a much needed lightness. Marigolden‘s lyrics are as heavy as lyrics get, as Porterfield eloquently addresses his struggle with sobriety (among other things), but the textural additions save the album from plunging too deep into the darkness.
