Maybe the NYC indie scene has really entered a "post-white" phase, finally! When we started this blog back in 2004, indie rock, soul and hip hop really felt like separate scenes. The few notable exceptions, like TV on the Radio, paved the way to a rediscovery of soul music that reached maturity in the following ...

It’s rare to stumble upon artists that blend tradition and experimentation, music’s past and future, as seamlessly as New Jersey’s avant-soul one man band Ehiorobo. Oringally from Nigeria, the guy writes and produces in his bedroom remarkably unpredictable r’n’b tunes that manage to also sound sincere and compelling. Some bands are like wine, they get better with time (sadly, most don’t). The Majorleans’ 2013 album "Black Belt" showed a confident band with solid songs and production values. Armed with a sound that could be described as "classic rock sans-cheese,"  and blessed with the character of songwriter Nicky Francis DiFonzo’s vocals, the record brings to mind ...

We blogged about soulful NYC’s singer songwriter Aisha Badru earlier this year, after one of her songs was picked for a Volkswagen commercial. Aisha earlier this month  traveled to Bali, Indonesia to donate a portion of the income she received from that ad to rebuild a home for a local poverty-stricken family. In the meantime, her other single "Mind of Fire," a simple, a-cappella track dealing with how the needs of our daily lives end up killing our dreams and motivations, was racking up plays on Spotify (video streaming below). After completing a short October tour in the southern US states, Aisha is preparing to release her debut album "Pendulum," scheduled for early 2018. It will also feature single "Bridges," also streaming.

The beginning of the second millennium will probably be remembered by music critics for the realization that soul lent itself to be pushed in new, more or less experimental directions. In the early aughts, a genre that was frowned upon by the tense and brainy children of the post-punk generation was given a new "indie ...

However, NYC-based MICKY (aka Michael Persall), might have just delivered the ultimate track to save you from those summer blues. "He Won’t," the Motown-pop influenced singer’s newest song premiering exclusively with the Deli, is another perfect example of MICKY’s penchant for making vintage sounds feel fresh and modern.
