TJ Kong & The Atomic Bomb’s Annual Halloween Show is Out of this World

Source: Rock On Philly

Listening to TJ Kong & The Atomic Bomb‘s new album, Dancing out the Door sounds like the “Post-Apocalyptic Americana” band is playing live in the room next to yours – if that room was the Maple Leaf or Tipitina’s in New Orleans, and the band members’ were the younger cousins of Reverend Horton Heat. It’s authentic, bizarre, and most of all, fun.

According to TJ Kong’s electrifying frontman, Dan Bruskewicz, that feeling is intentional. Instead of recording the album digitally, the band decided to record it all live on tape, and ...

The Front Bottoms, Basement Sell Out Starland Ballroom

Source: Rock On Philly

When The Front Bottoms and Basement announced their tour together it seemed to be a dream come true for most people.

Both bands have different sounds (and different fanbases, for that matter) but they work so well together, and it showed when they played to a sold-out Starland Ballroom on Saturday.

Basement opened around 9, and brought the energy immediately. Seeing Basement is like nothing else, it’s clear that they have a very special bond and it radiates to the audience, they’re just having fun. Seeing vocalist Andrew Fisher smile every time someone crowd surfed, or a mosh pit got started ...

Getting (Emo)tional with Brand New

Source: Rock On Philly

I discovered Brand New, like so many people, in high school.

My boyfriend at the time introduced me to their music, and soon I was playing their first two albums on repeat. While I enjoyed every song I heard, “Soco Amaretto Lime” became our anthem that summer. I felt like tortured frontman Jesse Lacey created that song just for me: It was the summer I turned 18, about to start college in a town far away, and in a wonderful relationship. I was full of optimism of my exciting, new life ahead.

Flash forward a few months later, and ...

Mac Demarco Improvises at The Mann

Source: Rock On Philly

Everyone’s favorite cig smoking, Jameson swigging-while-playing Canadian Mac Demarco made a stop in Philadelphia in support of his latest record, This Old Dog, and he did not disappoint.

Demarco played old and new classics from all three albums, and the crowd ate it up entirely. As soon as he stepped on stage the crowd greeted him with different variations of “Dad, Daddy” etc., which prompted him and his bandmates to chant back “Mommy” throughout the night. That’s the magic of a Mac Demarco show, everything feels so wonderfully improvised and laid back, yet still so tight and structured.

Why Henry Jamison Will Be Your New Favorite Singer-Songwriter

Source: Rock On Philly

All photos credit to Patrick McCormack

Henry Jamison speaks from his soul. Sure, singer-songwriters are a dime a dozen these days, but Jamison’s songwriting stands out from the rest. In his upcoming debut full-length record, The Wilds, Jamison shares unique, visual details in his lyrics that are reminiscent of the British Romantic Period in poetry. Considering his ancestors include George Frederick Root (one of the most popular songwriters of the Civil War era) and the 14th Century British poet John Gower, there might be something intuitive to his songwriting abilities.

Jamison, who writes all of his lyrics, claims is ...
