Charleston, South Carolina’s Shovels & Rope first caught my ear as they closed out night two of this year’s WXPN Non-COMMvention. The bulk of the crowd had cleared out after Counting Crows’ set, but vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Cary Ann Hearst made the best of the situation, thanking the crowd for staying past midnight to see them, as “it’s only after midnight that the babies go to bed.” And with that, Shovels & Rope had won my heart.

South Carolina-based duo Shovels and Rope made waves in the Americana/folk scene with its 2012 album, O’ Be Joyful. It was the band’s second album and first through Dualtone Records and earned critical acclaim and commercial success. Next week, the husband-and-wife team of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst will release their third album, Swimmin’ Time, again via Dualtone. There’s no need to wait another eight days to hear it though, as you can now stream the full album via NPR.org.

Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, together known as Shovels and Rope, will release their third album, Swimmin’ Time, on August 26 via Dualtone Records. In its support, the duo will return to Philadelphia’s Union Transfer, which they sold out last September, on Wednesday, September 24. Tickets will go on sale this Friday at noon via TicketFly.
The new album follows their 2012 breakout, O’ Be Joyful, which earned critical acclaim and the top spot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Listen to Swimmin’ Time‘s first taste, “The Devil is All Around,” below.
