Shearwater highlight Jet Plane and Oxbow during spirited set at Underground Arts

“This venue says it’s a place for emerging artists,” Shearwater vocalist Jonathan Meiburg mentioned early in their Underground Arts set last Saturday night. “We’ve been emerging for 15 years.” It was meant as a self-deprecating statement, but the reality is that Meiburg and band have gradually crafted a body of work that at once defies genre and stands as a bold musical statement. The massive guitars over plaintive, shimmering vocals – the mesmerizing journeys from unnamed islands to the shores of a darkening America. It’s all laid out and stripped bare ...

Good Cover Version: Shearwater does Bauhaus

Good Cover Version: Shearwater does Bauhaus

Pulp gave the world the song “Bad Cover Version.” But seeing as I’m a sonic optimist, I’m of the belief that there’s more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

I seriously can’t stop listening to this one y’all. Shearwater‘s cover of this Bauhaus gem is so very gloomy and sexy and diabolically listenable. Their version of “Kick In The Eye” sounds rapturous to mine ears, all badass bassline and heavenly devilish vocals. Plus that light show in this clip for ...

Free at Noon Flashback: Shearwater lights up the stage at World Cafe Live

Shearwater | Photo by Breanna Keohane for WXPN

Indie rock band Shearwater made an appearance for today’s Free at Noon concert at World Cafe Live. As just one stop along their North American tour, frontman Jonathan Meiburg told Philadelphia that they were up at 7a.m. ready to rock, and they did not disappoint.

The Austin, Texas- natives have a psych rock vibe with quirky keyboard tunes and lots of guitar vibrato, and the atmosphere of World Cafe was complimented with colored light beams illuminating the band. They debuted songs off of their new album Jet Plane and Oxbow kicking off the set with “Prime.” ...

Death Vessel @ Rock and Roll Hotel

Source: The WRGW Music Blog

Joel Thibodeau–better known by the moniker Death Vessel–took the stage at Rock and Roll Hotel on Friday for the third night of his tour with Jesca Hoop and Shearwater. While these three artists could be loosely and lazily looped together into the indie-folk genre, each represents music’s genre-bending diversity. They are prime examples of artists with […]

Fellow Travelers
(Sub Pop Records)

Buy it at Amazon!

You’d be forgiven for not realizing that Shearwater’s Fellow Travelers is an album of covers. Frontman Jonathan Meiburg has a voice so loaded with emotion that it twists these tracks into something new, and the covered artists have been invited to collaborate on the record as well…as long as they select a song that is not their own.

Shearwater rise to the one great rule of performing covers: make the song different enough to justify a cover. While “Hurts Like Heaven” retains its delicate edge, it sounds indie enough that it’s difficult to peg ...

Playlist: Swollen Fox Radio #13

Source: The Swollen Fox

Kevin MorbyThe time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is typically a pretty slow one in the music world. Fewer artists are out on tour, fewer albums are being released. This week, only two albums caught our attention: Shearwater’s covers LP, Fellow Travelers, and Kevin Morby’s debut solo LP, Harlem River. Upcoming shows to get excited about are also hard to find, but there are a few worth checking out next week. Bombino (with Here We Go Magic & Mean Lady), Alice Smith, Daley, and The Melodic are all in town and on this week’s playlist.

With slim-pickings in the aforementioned ...
