The Stone Foxes may be one of the hardest working bands in modern rock n’ roll.

After touring relentlessly for years and creating sweat-inducing, high energy live sets, the bluesy rock five-piece from San Francisco recently released their latest EP, Visalia, and are in the midst of a self-titled “Gigantour.”

“The tour has been awesome so far,” says vocalist and drummer Shannon Koehler in an phone interview with Rock On Philly.  “We love touring, we feed off of it. Every night we have fun and we have an emotional connection to what we’re playing, so that doesn’t get old.”

While Badflower may still be climbing the ranks of rock n’ roll stardom, the LA-based band already has created a diehard fan base in Philly. Their show last Thursday, May 4th at the Underground Arts Black Box was their third time playing the City of Brotherly Love, and a group of dedicated fans that has seen them play each time were ready to enjoy the infectious hooks and riffs once more. From the young fan who came with her father, to the older gentleman known affectionately around town as “Evil Pierre,” the ...

Wild Joy Keeps Rock n’ Roll Alive in Philly

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured Image by Mario Manzonio

While indie rock has been all the rage this past decade, Philly’s developed a significant enclave of hard rock and classic rock n’ roll bands from Breaking Benjamin to Silvertide. Wild Joy is solidly part of this scene and is nobly keeping rock n’ roll alive in the City of Brotherly Love. Formerly known as Band of Heads, Wild Joy chose their new moniker only a few months ago. “It felt right, and it’s fun,” says guitarist and vocalist Ali Awan. Rock On Philly chatted with Awan about the convergence of sounds in Wild ...

Wolf Alice Rocks Out at Union Transfer with Slaves

Source: Rock On Philly

Photography by Derek Brad

Wow, it’s amazing how far Wolf Alice has come in the past few months! I saw this British rock band back in September at the Trocadero. It was an amazing show, but small and intimate. This band still seemed like rock n’ roll’s best kept secret. Flash forward to last Friday, April 1st, and Wolf Alice almost sold-out Union Transfer. While it was harder for me to get up front and center than the last time I saw them, I was elated to see this band receive the enthusiasm that they deserve. The energy was ...

The wait should be worth it; Automagik has been making waves for “blending edgy pop with upbeat rock ‘n’ roll” with their Dark Daze EP. After experimenting with different influences on their last two albums, Cage the Elephant returns to a more bluesy, classic sound on their fourth and latest effort, Tell Me I’m Pretty. In an interview with The Aquarian Weekly, lead singer Matt Schultz calls the album “not minimalistic, but classic.” It’s a pretty succinct way to describe the no-frills, blues approach that makes Tell Me I’m Pretty reminiscent of the band’s explosive self-titled debut album back in 2008.

Californian rock band The Stone Foxes claim on their website that they “are an experience to dive into, to get wild with, to sweat with.” Known for their wild and enthusiastic live shows, it’s this dedication to old school rock’n’roll ethics that have made the band get noticed, despite not having a record label to help them. On a new tour to celebrate the release of their fourth studio album, Twelve Spells, the band is more excited than ever to interact with their audiences. On Tuesday, November 10th, The Stone Foxes will return to Philly ...

Why Aren’t You Listening To: Royal Blood

Source: Rock On Philly

“Why Aren’t You Listening to” is an irregularly running series at Rock on Philly, spotlighting artists in Philly and beyond that you should be keeping an eye (and ear) out for! The most recent series installment focuses on rock duo Royal Blood, from the UK.

Why you should be listening: Royal Blood has been getting major love on modern rock airwaves recently (like on 93.3 WMMR), and has secured enough buzz to open for the Foo Fighters in their upcoming tour (Dave Grohl even called them of his “favorite” bands).

Sounds like: Unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll. The British band creates ...

AC/DC Create Consistent Effort on Rock or Bust

Source: Rock On Philly

You can always count on AC/DC for some good old-fashioned rock n roll. In their 15th and latest studio album, Rock or Bust, AC/DC deliver exactly what you would expect from the classic rockers: singer Brian Johnson’s high-pitched screeching and simple, extremely catchy riffs. In one of the few changes, Rock or Bust marks the first album with rhythm guitarist Stevie Young (nephew of founding members Malcolm and Angus Young) to replace Malcolm due to health complications. Stevie learned well from his uncles, however, and Rock or Bust easily sounds like it could have been released in the ...

How a Rock Die-Hard Became Attuned to EDM

Source: Rock On Philly

With the rising popularity of electronic dance music (EDM), comes more criticism of the genre. The rock community has been one of the more outspoken groups of EDM. During the Foo Fighters’s acceptance speech at the 2012 Grammys for Best Rock Album, Dave Grohl announced in what appeared to be a dig at EDM, “To me, this award means a lot, because it shows the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do . . ...
