Video of The Day #336: Those Darlins

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

What a huge bummer this is, my friends. If you haven’t heard, Jessi Zazu (aka Jessi Darlin), founding member of sassy Nashville outfit Those Darlins, lost her fight with cervical cancer on Tuesday, September 12th. She was just 28 years old. In honor of this bright light, here’s a clip of Those Darlins on tour in the early days, in my favorite number “Wild One.” ...

A Tribute to George Michael (1963-2016)

I’m still finding words a bit challenging when it comes to talking about George Michael. Admittedly, over the years I became less of a fan, though certainly in my younger days (when his music was everywhere), I was not immune to those stonewash hipshakes, aviator shades, and 80s Elvis-esque bouffant coif.

When I was a young lass, George Michael was one of those fellows that could have been considered mad, bad, and dangerous to know (though perhaps not so much once he officially came out). The honest, openness of his voice is hard to match, and his lyrics are damned ...

A Tribute to Leon Russell (1942-2016)

It’s been a week already. The world has gone on, but there’s still a heck of a hole. In losing Leon Russell, the music-loving world lost an impactful force, greater than perhaps many even knew.

My experience with Leon began just under a decade ago, when I first began to get my hands on his excellent solo records. With his mischievous, warbling howl and mercurial, ever-changing sound, I was fascinated by the man with the wild white hair and beard. I was fortunate enough to see Leon live several years ago, and was happy to see a large crowd ...

Video of The Day #194: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Woke up to the sad news about the gorgeous Sharon Jones, who left this world after battling that evil asshole cancer. In tribute to this powerhouse singer, here’s a clip of Sharon with her Dap-Kings playing live on Jools Holland’s show over in the UK several years back. The gifted Jones is in rare form, soulful and sultry and impossible to ignore. When ...

A Tribute to Leonard Cohen (1934-2016)

2016 has been an incredibly rough year from a personal, political, and musical standpoint. As the months wind down in this difficult year, a bit of heartbreak was devoted to mourning this week’s loss of Leonard Cohen. As I did when we lost David Bowie at the start of the year, I wanted to say just a few words about what Mr. Cohen has meant to me over the years, as I’m sure he has meant something to many of you.

As with many of my musical learnings, I first learned of Leonard Cohen while poring over the imported ...

Good Cover Version: A Tribute to Prince

Pulp gave the world the song “Bad Cover Version.” But seeing as I’m a sonic optimist, I’m of the belief that there’s more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

I’m still in shock and denial about the passing of the Purple One. It doesn’t seem possible that Prince has exited the stage for good. Nor does it seem right. One of the few artists who could unite so many under the banner of great music, we will all forever ...

A Tribute to David Bowie (1947-2016)

Source: Fuzzy Logic

This is not something I was at all prepared to write. Ever, really. But especially not today. After all, David Bowie, the man who very probably really did fall to Earth, was going to live on. The elegant chameleon, incredibly mercurial musically and impossibly talented. The living legend was meant to just keep right on living. It’s an incredibly sad feeling, to wake up knowing one of the must magical men to ever exist is gone. In a way, it feels a bit like losing a friend. Bowie was always there, with a song for every season, every mood, every ...
