On Saturday December 5th, the public television series MY MUSIC (presented by TJL Productions) will present Close To You: Remembering The Carpenters, airing on Public Television stations nationwide. The film is a music-filled documentary that traces the Carpenters’ career through the eyes of Richard Carpenter and the group’s friends in the music business, such as Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach, Petula Clark and Paul Williams.

This weekend, I had a couple of the most enjoyable days I’ve ever spent at the Kennedy Center. I watched jazz singer Dianne Reeves guide a high school senior’s transformation from obedient schoolgirl into freewheeling jazz artist in about 10 minutes flat. I was a fly on the wall as the old-school rock artists’ manager who created Metallica sparred verbally with the man who helps create pop hits by putting songs in video games. And I saw futuristic images of lasers erasing a bleeding capillary on a vocal cord as easily as a pencil mark while a doctor explained how he surgically repaired the voices of Steven Tyler, Denyce Graves and Adele.

Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Arturo Sandoval are among the artists who will perform in Washington next week at a White House celebration of Latin music. “M sica Latina: In Performance at the White House,” hosted by the President and First Lady Michelle Obama, will also feature performances by Natalie Cole, Lila Downs, Raul Malo, Prince Royce, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz and Marco Antonio Sol s. The concer will be taped in the East Room of the White House on Monday, Sept. 16 and will air next month on PBS.
