Rent Party Shines With “New”

Source: Rock On Philly

Rent Party may be recent Philly transplants, but they certainly aren’t waiting to be discovered. With a slew of local shows already under their belt, and a ubiquitous marketing strategy (it’s impossible to walk around West Philly without seeing one of their bumper stickers hanging around), the Silver Spring, MD natives haven’t wasted any time introducing themselves to the city. This weekend, Rent Party dropped “New”, their latest single; if you haven’t heard from this band yet, now’s certainly the time to check in.

“New” is a welcome offering chock full of dense, tightly-driven guitar lines that intermingle throughout the ...

Elisa Money Shines On “Younger”

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured image via Rasheed Prioleau

One of the most common, yet revealing prompts around is the “Letter to My Younger Self” where the writer tries look back and imagine what words of wisdom they would impart upon their younger counterpart. It’s not a cliche as much as it is a staple because, while we may reminisce about particular moments, people rarely stop to think about who they were then and the journey that made them who they are now. On her newest single “Younger” from The Seed EP, Elisa Money is wistfully looking back on the days spent searching for shapes in ...

Ukiyo Releases New Single “Calling”

Source: Rock On Philly

Emerging producer Ukiyo is already making some big moves in the new year. The 20-year-old Australian, also known as Timothy Arnott, just premiered his new single “Calling” via NYLON this past Tuesday.

The delightfully minimalist track manages to draw you in and hold your attention regardless of the sparse arrangement, and successfully blends the best features from contemporary pop, electronic, and hip-hop music to create his finished product. Though subtle and relaxing, “Calling” maintains a soulful personality thanks to guest vocalist Your Girl Pho’s performance. Especially as we venture closer to Valentine’s Day, Your Girl Pho’s soulful petition ...

A Talk About The Bird and the Bee

Source: Rock On Philly

It’s hard to categorize music these days. Trying to describe a singer or a band used to be as simple as one line in a conversation. But imagine how you talk about your favorites with others. The one line has become, “they’re kinda like…,” and it leads into a tangent. Music is a wholly experience, a blend of all sorts. But at the core, a performer’s identity lies deep within them and becomes apparent in their work. The Bird and the Bee are no different. In an interview with one half of the band, Inara George (The Bird), the journey ...

Artist To Watch: The Upbeat Power of TIOGA

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured image courtesy of the artist

TIOGA only played their first show on September 16th, but they’ve already got us talking. The three-man-band from Philly is made up of Lead Vocalist/Guitarist Greg Adams, Guitarist Derrick Dieso, and Bassist/Keyboardist Austin Paragas, and together they make some pretty cool jams. The three friends kept us waiting for the band’s first big announcement through a series of suspenseful Facebook posts, hinting that something big was going to happen on September 5th.

Sure enough, the wait was worth it and on the 5th we found ourselves with the first two TIOGA singles.

Why Aren’t You Listening To: Vessna Scheff

Source: Rock On Philly

“Why Aren’t You Listening to” is an irregularly-running series at Rock on Philly, spotlighting artists in Philly and beyond that you should be keeping an eye (and ear) out for! This installment focuses on expressive Philadelphia songwriter Vessna Scheff.

Why you should be listening: If you’re a fan of songwriters who delve into personal and emotional themes, there’s no reason you shouldn’t already be listening to the sweetly-warbling Vessna Scheff. This artistic, curly-haired Philadelphian uses her ukulele and her gentle voice as vessels for her poignant songs, the effect of which is like sinking slowly into an old hammock–endlessly inviting, but ...

Why Aren’t You Listening To: NOTS

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured image courtesy of artist/Don Perry

For the past five years, Nots have been making the snarling garage rock that all but fizzled out a little under half a century ago. The all female outfit from Memphis takes a page from the proto-punk, psychedelic, and no wave acts of the late 60’s/early 70’s to forge a sound that’s unheard of from contemporary acts today. Chaotic and aggressive, Nots’ lo-fi production and nihilistic composition sounds sounds completely out of place in a music landscape where anyone can buy production software to polish up their sound.

With their newly-released second album, ...

Review by Dan Cousart

Psych Rockers Ceramic Animal are back at it again with a brand new song and music video! One of the better, up-and-coming acts in Philly, the Doylestown natives follow up their recent music video for “Maybe” with the bright, playful new track “Daydreams Via Memories.” The song draws from a variety of influences from the past and the present, featuring a pitch-shifting intro and a dance beat that’s sure to make you boogie. Johnny Popcorn Drop New Single “GO GO GO!” Reveal New LP

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured image courtesy of Corrine McAndrews

Philadelphia band Johnny Popcorn  recently dropped a new single, “GO GO GO!“announced their new album, Totem Pole. The band’s follow up to their 2012 debut The Crow, will be released on September 30th via MAD Dragon Records, Drexel University’s student-run record label.

Johnny Popcorn, comprised of MC-turned-singer/songwriter and producer, Hezekiah, guitarist Lloyd Alexander, and singer/songwriter Marjani Coral, marks its return by continuing to defy all possible genre classification. “GO GO GO!” is surprisingly straight-forward, driven mostly by a jittery acoustic guitar and Hezekiah’s urgent vocals set before chopped up gang vocals and ...

Straw Hats: A Punk Rock Odyssey Disguised as Unwanted Spaghetti

Source: Rock On Philly

How much fun is too much fun? When does fun get in the way of actual work? Is it possible for a project to be taken seriously when the goal is to have fun? These are the kinds questions that the members of Philadelphia Punk trio, Straw Hats, choose not to consider as they attempt to hammer out a song as fast as they humanly can. Members Robby Grote (Drums), Braden Lawrence (Guitar), and Breshon Martzall (Bass) first began making music together since they met each other in High School. The project was ...

Five Drexel Bands You Need To Know Now

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured Image of Darla via Magdelena Papaioannou

Packed basements, sweating under low ceilings, peering to get a glimpse of the band from behind a sea of classmates; dancing, moshing, tapped kegs, and music. These are some of the ingredients for a night out in West Philadelphia’s music scene. You’d never expect the Philly Punk/DIY Community to find its way to this part of the city given that the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University are both some of the most expensive colleges in the state (the latter being the most expensive). And yet, my own introduction to Philadelphia’s music scene was through packed basements ...

Kashish Picks Up the Pieces on Latest Single “Glass”

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured Image courtesy of the Artist

West Philly’s music scene has long been an incubator for some of the city’s rising stars. Bands like Modern Baseball, The Districts, and WC Lindsey started out in cramped basements rocking out like a bunch of Punks who got kicked out of CBGB, raging while honing their craft as performers. Out of that scene arrives a fresh sound in Kashish, a young R&B singer/songwriter whose latest single “Glass” shows a sophisticated artist who is as talented as she is fearless.

Kashish, along with collaborator/producer Perry Longo, returns to follow up last year’s The Hype EP with her ...

Kenny Greene Looks to Revitalize Philly Hip-Hop

Source: Rock On Philly

Where Kenny Greene’s story begins depends on who you ask. If you ask Kenny, he’ll tell you his music career began when he started drawing and writing lyrics on the walls of his room. “I saw that I could take it further,” he explains. “I started playing instruments… and I felt a natural reaction to every sound I heard. My big evolution started when I realized I could move people.” The encouragement he received from his friends and family motivated Kenny to reach out to producer Tyler Nicolo in the hopes of collaborating for a ...

Farao Talks About What Sets Her Apart from Other Musicians

Source: Rock On Philly

Photography by Samantha Sweeney

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Farao (a.k.a Kari Jahnsen) is set to take the world by storm with her unique brand of indie pop. At the show, her objective was clear: to play and just took the stage as soon as her instruments were set up without introduction. Her haunting voice and un-distorted use of strings and percussion instruments mixed with synths make for a refreshing take on the genre, and translates even better in person. We sat down with the Norwegian star backstage of her Underground Arts set earlier this week to pick her brains on everything from ...
