Good Cover Version: Widowspeak Does Neil Young

Good Cover Version: Widowspeak Does Neil Young

Pulp gave the world the song “Bad Cover Version.” But seeing as I’m a sonic optimist, I’m of the belief that there’s more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

Capturing more than a little of the original’s moonlit magic, Widowspeak add their own wonderful witchery to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.” Underneath all the gauzy vocals and guitar lurks no small amount of yearning, burning embers. Well done indeed by these New Yorkers.

XPN’s Gotta Hear Song of the Week: “Powderfinger” by Neil Young
On August 11th, 1976, Neil Young walked into Indigo Studios in Malibu with an acoustic guitar, and proceeded to record an album of new songs he’d been working on. The album, Hitchhiker, sat on the shelves for years — decades, even — until recently.

On all but one song – on which he played a piano – Young recorded ten intimate, striking songs with producer David Briggs in the control room.

Always prolific, the 70s were Neil Young’s most peak creative period, penning some of his best known and timeless songs and albums, starting with After The Goldrush in 1970, and ...

XPN MusicNotes: Neil Young to release long lost 1976 album “Hitchhiker” on 7/14

Neil Young’s Hitchhiker

“I spent the night there and recorded nine solo acoustic songs, completing a tape I called Hitchhiker. It was a complete piece, although I was pretty stony on it, and you can hear it in my performances. Dean Stockwell, my friend and a great actor who I later worked on Human Highway as a co-director, was with us that night, sitting in the room with me as I laid down all the songs in a row, pausing only for weed, beer, or coke.” -Neil Young from 2014 memoir Special Deluxe
