This week’s throwback jam is one steeped in a rich history that stretches back to the golden days of Motown. “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” was a song written for Motown Records by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong back in 1966. The label’s legendary owner Berry Gordy initially rejected both Smokey Robinson’s and Marvin Gaye’s renditions of the song and refused to release them. Eventually, he accepted Gladys Knight’s performance of the song, although he had Whitfield make it “stronger” in order to “out-funk” the emerging Aretha Franklin.
