Matt Pond PA just announced pretty much everything

Matt Pond PA announced a 12th studio album Wednesday called Still Summer. It’s due out August 11 on Pond’s own label, 131 Records, and will be the last release under the name Matt Pond PA, a name that’s been going strong since its Philadelphia inception nearly 20 years ago. Yet over time, more songs will be added in the future to both Still Summer and Pond’s December 2016 release Winter Lives. It’s confusing, but cool.

Matt Pond PA also announced the immediate release of two new songs — but they’re not part of ...

Matt Pond PA caught my ear back in my college days with Measure, an elegant collection of songs released on a tiny Philly label called File 13. On that album, followed in quick succession by two excellent Polyvinyl releases — The Nature of Maps and The Green Fury, both from 2002 the eponymous songwriter showed that he was a man on a creative streak, an artist who had no reservations about bringing cello and violin into the indierock community, a musician who surrounded himself with a rotating cast of players ...

Free at Noon Flashback: Matt Pond PA brings his wintry charm to WCL

Matt Pond PA / Cameron Pollack for WXPN

Matt Pond PA‘s music was made for the long drive home, for the precious little time spent with family. The music off his new record Winter Lives evokes images of snow-capped pines and valleys dusted in white. His lyricism evokes imagery of a world that, while rife with problems, is still beautiful. His music, especially from this latest record, instills a belief that there is somehow still love out there, a belief, foremost, in people.

That belief shone throughout his Free at Noon set; starting with “In Winter” he made the ...

Back in 2005, I started to hear a lot about this guy Matt Pond and PA, which I guessed was the state he was living in. Ever the curious listener, I decided to find out what kind of music he was making, what the talk was all about, so I picked up the new album, Matt Pond PA‘s Several Arrows Later. For me and many others, this album became the gateway into the rich and textured imagination of Pond. Perfectly crafted melodies, a glimmering sheen around the instruments, and ...

Studies in Contrast: Matt Pond PA and Laura Stevenson don’t back down at The Foundry

There was always an interesting contrast in singer and songwriter Matt Pond when he lived in Philadelphia. Under the nom-de-stage matt pond PA, he spent the late 90s and early aughts making albums and EPs of touching, beautifully-orchestrated songs awash in cello and meditative acoustic guitar. But he also came up during the Guided by Voices heyday when crowds at Philly clubs were largely indie-bros who binge-drank and talked loudly over everybody, even the people they were ostensibly there to see. Pond had no patience for that shit, and ...

Matt Pond PA’s The State of Gold Gives Us Chills

Source: Rock On Philly

The State of Gold by Matt Pond PA is filled with many different sounds and high energy. The New York-based (but formed in Philly) band included a lot of synth sounds, and tempo changes in their eleventh studio album. It’s easy to fall into the rhythm and get lost in the sounds. Filled with awe-striking harmonies, it’s nearly impossible not to have goosebumps.

The first track on the album “More No More,” has a cool echo effect. It’s interesting to listen to the timing of this song and it’s not your usual pattern. It shows off the true talent of ...

Recap: Matt Pond PA @ Underground Arts

Pond01

Photos and words by Matthew Shaver

Pardon the cliche, but yes, Matt Pond is like fine wine. I can understand where people may say things like “I’m not a Matt Pond fan.” But, I still believe that every album released has something that most people will like on it, even if it’s just one song. For the Pond faithful, every release is a lovingly crafted masterpiece of introspection, love, longing, nostalgia, and generally warm, fuzzy feelings, even if the lyrics themselves are a bit cynical.

So, a group of us gathered at Underground Arts to celebrate the 10th anniversary of ...

St Paul and the Broken BonesHailing from Birmingham, Alabama, St. Paul & the Broken Bones will bring their Muscle Shoals-inspired soul music to Johnny Brenda’s later next month. Their debut album, Half the City, was released yesterday, channeling the usual legends (Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, etc.) and fitting well with others currently atop the soul revival train (Alabama Shakes, Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones). And since I can’t get enough of these new soul artists, you’ll find St. Paul & the Broken Bones opening up this week’s edition of Swollen Fox Radio.

Half the City is one in a handful of solid new recordings released ...

Matt Pond PA returns to Philly for Emblems 10 Year Anniversary Tour

Source: The Key (WXPN)

mattpond Matt Pond | photo via artist facebook page | https://www.facebook.com/mattpondpa

It’s hard to believe that an entire decade has gone by since indie alt/rock outfit and formerly-based-in-Philadelphian Matt Pond PA released the beloved LP Emblems; but alas, time flies.

In celebration of this occasion, Matt Pond will reattach the “PA” to his name and play Underground Arts Friday, May 2, joined by act The Lighthouse and the Whaler for the 10 year anniversary. Matt Pond has an armory of albums under his belt, but the acoustically driven, stripped down Emblems manages to strike a sentimental chord that has long withstood ...
