Video of The Day #286: Marika Hackman

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

An excellent song, straight up, Marika Hackman‘s “Boyfriend” simmers with a gritty scuzz and plenty of sarcasm and feminism. Both -isms carry over into the video, making it as worthwhile a watch as the song is a worthwhile listen. Kill two birds with one stone and check this out immediately.

Marika Hackman – I Follow Rivers (Lykke Li Cover)

Marika Hackman’s cover of Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers” is spooky. There is a seductive heaviness to the London artist’s version that hits hard whenever she moves into the chorus or digs into minor chords. She brings out a darkness absent from the original using her own inventions (a ghoulish harmony that bleeds in and out the song, for example), but you’ll no doubt recognize a few sounds that she has isolated and reinterpreted.

Keep an eye out for Marika Hackman’s upcoming Deaf Heat EP, out April 14th via Dirty Hit. Until then, enjoy her rendition of “I ...

One of the most arresting and captivating voices we’ve heard recently belongs to British singer-songwriter Marika Hackman. Marika formed her first band as a teenager ...

It’s been getting colder in the morning. After the cursed summer of witch heat we can all breathe visibly again. Here to score your autumn pre-dawn is Marika Hackman’s new single, “Cinnamon,” off her upcoming EP, Sugar Blind. Hearing influences like Kurt Cobain and Nico is easy –– and Hackman has already brilliantly covered both. For Sugar Blind, hot on the heels of this summer’s That Iron Taste, she has teamed up with Alt-J producer Charlie Andrews and is hitting not only the right note, but her own.

Sugar Blind will be released December 9th via Dirty ...
