The Stone Foxes Return to Philly for Another Rollicking Rock Show this Sunday!

Source: Rock On Philly

The Stone Foxes may be one of the hardest working bands in modern rock n’ roll.

After touring relentlessly for years and creating sweat-inducing, high energy live sets, the bluesy rock five-piece from San Francisco recently released their latest EP, Visalia, and are in the midst of a self-titled “Gigantour.”

“The tour has been awesome so far,” says vocalist and drummer Shannon Koehler in an phone interview with Rock On Philly.  “We love touring, we feed off of it. Every night we have fun and we have an emotional connection to what we’re playing, so that doesn’t get old.”

City and Colour Swoons The Electric Factory

Source: Rock On Philly

City and Colour checked Philly off the Northeast extension of their current tour by making a loyal stop at the Electric Factory. Seattle’s own, Noah Gunderson, opened up the night with his bold acoustics. Dallas Green made a point of commending Gunderson for embarking on this tour, as the previous drive was a 10-hour stretch from Cincinnati, remarking that, “it’s not an easy thing to do.” Gunderson is making this tour on his own, and I have to admit, you don’t always catch an opener that has the same vocal presence as a full band. Sometimes all you ...

An Introduction To Kasador

This Saturday, indie rockers Kasador will be making their Philly debut with a headlining performance at The Fire. The Canadian five-piece, featuring Nick Babcock on piano/synth, Boris Baker on bass, Angus Fay on drums, Will Hunter on vocals/guitar, and Cameron Wyatt on guitar, has been out on the road all month long in support of their self titled debut EP, which was released independently this past September.

Though Kasador has only been around for about three years, they’ve been climbing up the ladder incredibly fast; they’ve shared the stage with big-name acts ...

Alt-Rockers TIOGA Play Milkboy This Thursday!

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured image courtesy of Ashley Gellman

TIOGA has only been around for a few months, but they’re quickly becoming a noteworthy name in their native Philadelphia. Since their first Rock On Philly feature back in September, TIOGA has spent the past few months touring extensively around the Northeast in support of their first EP, Sycamores. The five songs on Sycamores manage to show more range and depth than most young acts manage to show on their first few full lengths, let alone on their very first EP.

Starting with the radio-ready pop rock of lead single “Tigers”, Sycamores deftly navigates the ...

Darla Releases Latest Album ‘Darla Rolls The Dice!’ at Boot & Saddle to Glowing Enthusiasm

Source: Rock On Philly

You may not be aware, but this past Wednesday was a monumental night for the funk scene in Philadelphia. It was the night of Darla‘s record release party for their new album Darla Rolls The Dice! at Boot & Saddle in South Philly.

After forming at Drexel University, this instrumental funk 8-piece made a lasting impression at this year’s Beardfest and has continued to play shows all around Philly. Their new record signals a new milestone for the band: it was co-produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by none other than Philly’s own Phil Nicolo, a legendary producer who ...

Get ready for a musical trifecta including some of Philly’s best bands all at one venue. This Friday, join Sexoffice, Out of the Beardspace, and Muscle Tough at the Hard Rock Café in Center City to celebrate the highly-anticipated album release of Sexoffice’s FEELISM. Check out this humorous video from Sexoffice about their new album:

All three bands explore spacey sounds and progressive veins, which makes for a very cohesive billing. It’s not much of a coincidence; some of the Out of the Beardspace members used to be Sexoffice before creating OOTB, including ...

Still Crazy After All These Years: Paul Simon at The Mann

Source: Rock On Philly

On June 25th, I was given a great opportunity, a chance to see the legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon at the Mann Music Center. I did not know what to expect. I am a big fan, but  he’s getting older, I thought, and playing a concert to a large crowd can be quite demanding for anyone, let alone someone that is 74. I parked my car and made my way towards the concert hall. I could see a sea of people who were likely in their forties or older. I was clearly one of the youngest people at the ...

BRONCHO, Winter and Straw Hats Light Up Johnny Brenda’s

Source: Rock On Philly

Thursday, June 23rd was quite a night indeed. The venue, Johnny Brenda’s, easily one of the best spots to see a band live in Philadelphia. The lineup, BRONCHO, Winter and Straw Hats. Needless to say, it was an incredible night.

The night began when punk trio Straw Hats took the stage. The band, composed of Robbie Grote and Braden Lawrence of local Indie Rock gods the Districts and bassist Breshon Martzall, blasted through a ferocious set of songs from their split with Tangiers and their March 2016 self titled EP. Self describing their sound as “the pasta no one wants”, ...

A Beautiful, Drama-Free Evening with Ray LaMontagne

Source: Rock On Philly

All Photography by Mike Mauger

Let’s play a fun game.  Think of what you know of Ray LaMontagne.  Got it?  Great.  Now think of what you know by My Morning Jacket?  All set?  Great.  Now what would you get if you put them together and create a little musical baby?

Well, if your answer was an illuminating, transient musical experience reminiscent of Pink Floyd, then you were right.  Now…  if that wasn’t your answer, then you were wrong.  But the good news is that Ray LaMontagne / My Morning Jacket music baby actually exists, and even if you missed ...

Mitski’s Roller Coaster of Emotions at PhilaMOCA

Source: Rock On Philly

Like most other Mitski fans (whether they admit to it or not), I have spent many a night in my room gross-crying along to “First Love/Late Spring” and scream-crying along to “Your Best American Girl”. She is an artist known for her darkly poetic lyrics spliced between soft, solo basslines and aggressive guitar and drum pick-ups, so I was unsure of whether or not her music would allow for a compelling stage performance. Mitski and her band stopped by the PhilaMOCA Friday June 24th , on tour to promote her new album Puberty 2;  the intimate space ...

Modern Baseball Comes Home

Source: Rock On Philly

All Photography by Jim Trocchio

I remember seeing Modern Baseball at house shows on Drexel’s campus, look at them now. This past weekend Modern Baseball headlined over at The Fillmore in Philly.

This was my first time seeing Joyce Manor and to be completely honest, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy them that much. Boy was I mistaken, they completely blew me away. As soon as they entered the stage the crowd immediately pushed forward.

One of my favorite things musically is double vocals, and they didn’t only have two but they had three vocalist. One lead singer, ...

Top 8 Moments at Beardfest 2016

Source: Rock On Philly

All Photography by Lauren Silvestri

The weekend of June 16th, I attended my first Beardfest, and it certainly won’t be my last. Despite its title, Beardfest has nothing to do with facial hair, but rather it is a music, art and sustainability festival put on every year by local band Out of the Beardspace.

It’s truly amazing how one band with members in their early and mid-twenties were able to accomplish something on such a large scale. Featuring three days of workshops, art, and over 25 bands on two stages at Paradise Lakes Campground in Hammonton, NJ, Beardfest ...

Taste Of Chaos Tour, When Nostalgia Comes To Philadelphia

The Taste of Chaos tour has been around for almost a decade now. The tour always brings fantastic bands to cities around the United States but this year was just a bit more special. It was truly the year of nostalgia. Not only was Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday, and Saosin on the tour but in Philly we had the pleasure to see The Early November as well as The Starting Line. These two bands alongside the other three are absolute staples to the 2003-2006 pop punk/emo era.
