Looking to get your dreamy, alt fix? Brooklyn’s Yucca King produces heavy 90’s indie vibes, where laid back instrumentals meet wretching, bare-all vocals and angst-ridden lyricism. They just dropped their latest single, "Know It All," a track that would almost qualify for a ballad, if not for it’s bursting hook. Check out the band’s latest single streaming ...

Benjamin Lanz has played in several bands you might know, including the National and Beirut, but the solo debut of his new project LANZ is just as compelling as his other acts. "Karla’s Retreat," from his upcoming album Hoferlanz I, is a driving and forceful track, laden with melodic hooks from piano, guitar and an unexpected brass section, and the song is helped along by a powerful, yet tasteful rhythm section. The instrumental breaks are some of the most confident we’ve heard this year, but their impact is deepened by Lanz’s self-assured vocals, which also keep "Karla’s Retreat" structurally sound. All this is supported by a charming video depicting Lanz in a slightly ominous, cabin-y studio, and outdoor scenes of potentially creepy houses. It’s shot on film, which you might’ve guessed. "Karla’s Retreat" is defiantly indie, but perhaps the most captivating thing about this song in a sometimes uncertain genre is that LANZ’s feet are planted firmly on the ground. Hoferlanz I is out October 14th, and will also be released as a cassette for Cassette Store Day. –Geena Kloeppel

Inspired by his 12 years in NYC, Spirit Plate frontman Brian Russ found inspiration for the the passion project Youth Moose—the psych rock band’s sophomore album. Recorded in Russ’ home studio, the LP features tracks presented as a reflection of the New York experience, based on everything from street art to architecture. This record is about finding clarity in the chaos (a feeling any New Yorker can relate to) all while experimenting with new sounds and content. In the single “Daily News Headline” (streaming below) the group tackles themes of political and civil unrest, overlaying a triumphant mashup of gritty guitar arrangements and a lively horn section. The band recently also unveiled the video for second single ‘All Day Long.’ – Lilly Milman

Castle Black Bring Their Towering, Magnificently Dark Roar to Arlene’s This Saturday Night

Source: New York Music Daily

If you run a music blog, it’s especially validating to watch an artist or an act deliver on the promise of their early days.  A couple of years ago, power trio Castle Black weren’t all that tight, and they were still getting the hang of their instruments. But it was obvious they had something that most rock acts in this city don’t have: fearlessness. For one, they don’t fall back on all the lazy indie rock guitar cliches – the moveable chords, the open chords, the pilfered New Order and Cure licks – that all the richkid Bushwick bands use. ...

Ferocious Power Trio Castle Black Put Out One of 2017’s Best Short Albums

Source: New York Music Daily

In an era when gentrfiication, the closure of one venue after another and subway closures all down the line at night have landed one crushing blow after another on the New York music scene, Castle Black’s rise to become one of this city’s best bands is as heartwarming as it is improbable. A couple of years ago, they were playing the usual cruddy circuit of bottom-tier venues that most new bands never gain enough traction to leave. Since then, Castle Black have put out a succession of ep’s, each one better than the other and emerged as a relentlessly ...

Algiers’ Enigmatic New Album Looks at Current Day Perils Through a Glass, Darkly

Source: New York Music Daily

Algiers are one of the world’s most individualistic, relevant bands. Their 2014 debut album was a grim, confrontational mashup of oldschool soul, new wave and postrock, with a fiery populist, anti-racist sensibility. Their latest release, The Underside of Power – streaming at Spotify – is more Sandinista than London Calling . It’s a jaggedly interconnected suits that owes as much to the 80s film scores of Brad Fiedel and RZA’s lavish 90s Wu-Tang Clan sample collages than it does to rock or soul music. Informed by the Black Lives Matter movement, hip-hop, oldschool gospel and Albert Camus, it demands repeated ...
