KORN, Rob Zombie, and In This Moment Bring The Metal and Theatrics at BB&T Pavillion

Source: Rock On Philly

Photography by Samantha Sweeney

I have been waiting close to two decades for this concert. While I have a pretty diverse music palate, heavy metal has always had a special place in my heart.  Since I was about eight years-old, Rob Zombie then KORN planted the seeds that would later turn into how I define myself, my aesthetic and, simply put, the music hoarder snob that I think I am. Needless to say, the whole week–nay, months before the concert–I was giddy out of my skin to see these people, these artists whose faces and sounds I knew since I ...

Video of the Week: “The Fighter” by In This Moment

Source: Rock On Philly

Featured Image occurs at 1:15

This week’s edition of Video of the Week goes to “The Fighter” by In This Moment. The band’s latest video, though toned down from their usual, highly-stylized theatrics, carries no less strength by focusing solely on enigmatic front woman Maria Brink. Brink, sporting war paint and heavily smeared makeup, looks as if she is decompressing after battle as she belts out the cathartic ballad of self-resilience that appears on their 2014 effort Black Widow.  The message of the song, which Brink says is “…about rising to our fullest power and overcoming tragedy,” combined ...

Papa Roach Release F.E.A.R.less New Album

Source: Rock On Philly

Papa Roach make a powerful comeback with their eighth studio album F.E.A.R (Face Everything and Rise), packed with equal parts emotion and guitar solos. The instrumentals create a sense of emerging from the rubble of a destroyed world, which carries throughout the album. The opening title track sets this atmosphere with thrashing riffs, contrasting melodic and coarse vocals, and subtle synths that create an air of suspense and distress.

“Broken As Me” meshes slow, distorted vocals with rough screams and a powerful, melodic chorus. The vocals gradually transition into screams as the instrumentals build in both volume and pace, with sound effects aiding the shift into both the softer chorus and ...

In This Moment’s Maria Brink: Empowering or Problematic for Metal Front Women?

Source: Rock On Philly

Women and their bodies are a battleground, subject to extreme criticism, especially in rock music.  Last Tuesday night at In This Moment‘s show at Theatre of Living Arts, it became clear front-woman Maria Brink has engaged herself as the subject of that ideological warfare of sexuality.

Outwardly, the stage was dressed up as a sinister circus, complete with a distinctive red tent, golden arches, gratuitous lighting, wind-machines, blacklight makeup, and demon backup dancers, perfect for the band’s new concept album Black Widow–a slick, rage-fueled compilation featuring the strong and sensual femme fatale titular character revealing herself as a beacon of beautiful destruction, asserting ...
