Why Kanye Stormed the Stage at the Grammys

Source: Rock On Philly

Let me preface this by saying that Kanye West does not need apologists. His work and current stance within and against the music industry make the words and actions of “Kanye West apologists” purely offensive. With that out of the way, to business.

Kanye almost stormed the stage at the Grammys last night. When Beck won album of the year over Beyonce, Kanye’s head popped up for a moment on the television screen as Beck looked for his collaborators. Kanye reached for the mic, smiled, shook his head, and retreated.

Looks like it might have been a joke, right? In an ...

2015 Grammy Nominations: An Opinion

Source: Rock On Philly

The nominations for the 2015 Grammy Awards were announced in full in the beginning of last month, and there was a bit of backlash, which is to be expected. The Recording Academy, the group behind the entire awards ceremony and awarding in general, has had some interesting choices in nominees every year and this year is no different. Although some nods were pleasant surprises, others could be considered safe choices. Here’s the run-down of two major categories and my thoughts on the nominations.

Charli XCX’s Sucker Is Delicious And Here’s Why

Source: Rock On Philly

Charli XCX‘s third studio album Sucker is young and edgy. She made a big break this year with collaborations with Iggy Azalea and her own single “Boom Clap” written for The Fault in Our Stars. “Sucker” starts off with a big “F*** you” and sets the scene for a riot and an over the top album. “Break the Rules” follows suit in a school girl rebellion. It was released as a single and has a fun bridge with a punkish melody that plays into her rock side.

The throwback sound can be heard in “ ...

Let’s Talk About Iggy Azalea

Source: Rock On Philly

Iggy Azalea is a hot button topic right now. She came (seemingly) out of nowhere and took popular music by storm. But that’s just the thing, she took the pop world by storm rather than the hip hop world.

I have a lot of issues with Iggy Azalea, least of all the dialogue concerning her often racist comments. I’ve been researching hip hop for the past two months for my senior thesis, so my brain is steeped in these dilemmas and arguments and every time Iggy Azalea comes up in conversation, I try to hold my tongue. To be ...

The Iggy Azalea vs. Snoop Dogg feud is so fake. Unless it’s real.

Source: The Washington Post » Music

Whoa, that escalated quickly. What started as an oddball Twitter feud between the controversial rapper of the moment (Iggy Azalea) and the fading hip-hop icon of the ’90s (Snoop Dogg) has turned into an weird and disturbing fight complete with Instagram threats.

Pop Music Brings Its A-Game

Source: Rock On Philly

If you’ve been as disappointed in pop music as I’ve been for as long as I have, fear no more! I’m excited to announce that pop music is taking back an inch of artistry and getting good again. There’s a strange but exciting trend of artists recalling 90s beats and conventions, but somehow it sounds completely fresh. Let’s take a look at this summer’s best pop hits:

Fences (feat. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis) – “Arrows”

Text from my brother: You listen to the new Fences/Macklemore song? I’m not sure if I actually like it, but I sure can’t stop listening to ...

Azalea and Ora Combat Patriarchy in “Black Widow”

Source: Rock On Philly

Iggy Azalea’s new single, “Black Widow” featuring Rita Ora has been blowing up the charts and, more recently, the duo performed the song together live at the 2014 MTV VMAs.  The week before, however, Azalea debuted the song’s music video on YouTube.

Rita Ora (right), Iggy Azalea (center), Michael Madsen (left) start in the music video for “Black Widow”

Azalea, who co-directed the video, stars as a diner waitress who waits on Rita Ora and her super-obnoxious and significantly-older boyfriend (played by actor Michael Madsen of Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs fame).  As she chops lettuce for the boyfriend’s ...

Hey, BET, who the heck is Lionel ‘Ritchie?’

Source: The Washington Post » Music

No one will blame you if you didn’t make it through all three hours and 48 minutes of this year’s BET Awards, but Nicki Minaj almost made it worth sticking with the entire messy, drawn-out production.

During her acceptance speech for best female hip hop artist — a category that’s had its lean years because there hasn’t been always been a consistent stream of popular female rappers to compete for the title — Minaj leveled an insult at fellow nominee Iggy Azalea that was so thinly veiled it could have been wearing Rihanna’s Naked Dress from the CFDA Awards.
