Minnesota’s Hippo Campus bless Union Transfer tonight in support of their debut full-length Landmark. Johnny Brenda’s plays host to punk-rooted singer/songwriter Alice Bag for a headlining show tonight. A former member of groundbreakers The Bags, her fast-paced tunes are just what you expect from the LA frontrunner; brass, electric and ...

Just Announced: Hippo Campus bring their tuneful ‘kinda pop’ to Union Transfer in March

Hippo Campus | photo by John Vettese for WXPN

Hippo Campus have taken the last 18 months to explode onto the scene, releasing two insanely catchy EPs to showcase their closely impeccable twist on band-centered pop music. Lucky for us, Minnesota’s up-and-coming will be gracing Union Transfer on March 28th in support of their debut full length Landmark, out in February of next year.

Blending late-2000s indie pop (imagine if Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City had a kid with The Killers) with cleverly constructed lyricism, the band’s interpretation of modern popular music is refreshing. Focusing on vocalized ...

Carl Bahner, drummer of Philly indie-rock band Cheerleader, has released his own remix of Areoplane Mode‘s “Aphrodite”.

Released under the name “Bahner,” the mix takes the minimal pop of the original and takes it into the realm of house music while still emphasizing the soaring vocals of singer Jess Carvo. Bahner’s version grows off a steady bass pulse and jumping synths with samples of Carvo’s thrilling oohs and aahs.

Cheerleader may not have any upcoming shows, but Bahner is keeping busy. The club-ready track comes as the first ...

On the heels of releasing their sophomore EP South, Minnesota indie rockers Hippo Campus have announced a national tour that brings them to the First Unitarian Church on May 17th.

The band broke through in a big way last year thanks to the one-two punch of South and its predecessor Bashful Creatures, which caught the ear of Twin Cities public radio station The Current. The two albums are rhythmic, poppy and colorful in a Vampire Weekend / Local Natives kind of way, a combination that led to slots at ...
