Veteran singer-songwriter Juliana Hatfield takes over Boot & Saddle for a headlining gig with Laura Stevenson. Hatfield’s new record Pussycat (out April 28th) hits a little harder than most, using gritty guitar work and pure kickassery to create a fantastic sound. The show is 21+, and more information can be found on the XPN Concert Calendar.

Johnny Brenda’s plays host to a gig headed up by onetime Guided By Voices member Tobin Sprout. Bringing along his new Burger Records-released album The Universe And Me, Sprout is ...

Remix Fix: Goldfrapp/Joe Goddard

Remix Fix: Goldfrapp/Joe Goddard

In theory I like the idea of the remix: taking someone else’s song and tweaking it the way you want it done. It’s a great means for completely redoing something, and for reinterpretation. Sometimes remixes go awry, and sometimes they’re better than the original. Remix Fix is all about the happy medium when a remix totally nails it and makes a song that much better.

I’m of the mind that pretty much anything anyone in Hot Chip touches will turn to gold, but aural alchemist Joe Goddard proves me right in this particular instance with his dark electro take on ...

Video Of The Day #223: Goldfrapp

Video Of The Day #223: Goldfrapp

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

I’ve loved Goldfrapp for well over a decade now, so a new video of theirs will always make me happy. Ahead of the March release of their seventh long player Silver Eye the band has unleashed this video for “Anymore.” Filmed on a volcanic island, the cinematography is gorgeous. The choreography is quite interesting. And the elastic slink of the song itself is true Goldfrapp: impossibly ...

Alison Goldfrapp directed the video, which was shot on the volcanic island of Fuerteventura (one of the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa), which is also where she took the self-portraits that accompany the album. The NYC shows happen at Brooklyn Steel.

Moody, Goth-Tinged Duo the Smoke Fairies Play a Rare Free Show in Williamsburg

Source: New York Music Daily

British duo the Smoke Fairies set unpretentious vocals with low-key harmonies to attractive, tersely constructed, subtly orchestrated keyboard melodies with a typically shadowy, nocturnal ambience. A lot of Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire’s songs bring to mind Blonde Redhead at their most darkly shoegazy. The Smoke Fairies have a new self-titled album, their third, streaming at Spotify and a free, full-band show coming up on Sept 1 at Rough Trade in Williamsburg at 7 PM.

It’s a change of pace – is the heavy use of synths and piano this time around an attempt to replicate a mannered, campy ...
