Lunifred Benjamin releases new single “Atheist Anthem”

Source: Deli Magazine NY

Lunifred Benjamin releases new single

Brooklyn-based musician, Lunifred Benjamin – who recently played Rough Trade – crosses genre lines with his mellow prog-folk, while evoking a rootsier-sounding Destroyer with a voice reminiscent of Girls’ Christopher Owens.  In his most recent release, “Atheist Anthem” Benjamin also strays away from common subjects, claiming “Nobody knows what happens when you die” and bringing up (unsurprisingly given the title) the topic of atheism in a rather casual tone.  Using strings and subtle guitar riffs, Lunifred Benjamin obviously enjoys to be in a category all his own, leaving us wondering what unexpected musical elements he can bring next. – Madeleine Grossman

Christopher Owens Charms Fans at Intimate Gig

Source: Rock On Philly

Just minutes before Christopher Owens and Liam Hayes’s Saturday night show at World Cafe Live was slated to begin, the venue was nearly empty.  Some older fans lounged by the bar while small, distinct groups of teenagers chit-chatted in the pit. Christopher Owens’s pianist sat in head-to-toe denim at a long, wooden table by the stairwell, taking a moment to relax before the show.  He had an intimidating aura about him, as if he was special in some way, but fans walked by without realizing that in an hour, they would be cheering for him on stage.

Introducing: Hot Flash Heat Wave

Source: All Things Go

R1-03795-0012

Look out world — here comes Hot Flash Heat Wave! A garage quartet from San Francisco by way of Berkeley and Davis, this band isn’t inventing anything new, instead drawing from specific influences in exactly the right ways. Part early Strokes, part Girls-esque surf rock with an angrier Tom Verlaine for a lead singer, Hot Flash Heat Wave’s self-released debut EP bursts out of the gate with a confident yet unpolished set of six great tracks, ranging from the fuzzed out “Dirty Dreamer (XXX)” to the slow burning “Rum Runner.” Anthems like “Turning Blue” and “Slam Dance” prove that this ...

Tears For Fears – Girls (Animal Collective Cover)

Source: All Things Go

Tears For Fears’ most recent record, 2004′s Everyone Loves A Happy Ending, was the first original material Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith had produced together since 1989′s The Seeds of Love and their subsequent split two years later. It’s no surprise the influential duo are back in the studio working on a new album — reissues and reunion shows have been hinting at it since …Happy Ending‘s release — but what is in fact surprising is what Orzabal and Smith did to get back into the recording groove. They wrote covers. Okay, not that shocking, I ...

Tobias Jesso Jr. – Just A Dream

Source: All Things Go

It doesn’t get much simpler than Tobias Jesso Jr.‘s “Just A Dream.” Armed with nothing but his vocals and keys, the Vancouver-based artist produces a song that’s beautiful as it is haunting thanks to some subtle effects. Imagine a Paul McCartney ballad being played through an old dusty VHS and you’ll get the idea. Give “Just A Dream” a listen above.

The 1975 — Girls (The Knocks Remix)

Source: All Things Go

The 1975 3.0

Don’t get me wrong, The 1975’s “Girls” can stand perfectly fine on its own. Tongue-in-cheek lyrics, an overly conventional guitar riff, and a highly calculated music video all work for the band’s playful wit. But when you’re already playing, why not have more fun?

That’s how ATG fave The Knocks approach their remix of “Girls.” A track originally suited for tame head-bobbing is now a full-fledged dancefloor treasure, and no one’s complaining about it. Guitars become pianos, drums are reconstructed into energetic beats, and synth melodies fill in anywhere and everywhere. The result is a thing of beauty that ...

The 1975 – Girls

Source: All Things Go

Leave it to The 1975 to come up with the best video of the year. Equal parts pop perfection and self-aware humor, the Manchester foursome are ironically at their best in this visual treatment for LP standout “Girls.” If you’re like us, you’ll be hitting play on this one a lot. Watch it above.
