TV On the Radio Bring Catharsis and Renewal to Seeds

Source: Rock On Philly

TV On the Radio‘s fifth studio album Seeds is their first full-length in three years. After the passing of the band’s bassist Gerard Smith in 2011, TVOTR stood on uncertain ground, but Seeds is TVOTR’s catharsis and brave next step, all in one.

TVOTR’s sound is incredibly similar to Broken Bells, the unexpected but brilliant mashup of Danger Mouse and The ShinsJames Mercer. Both bands have the same dedication to a space age electronica, an 80’s futurism that TVOTR play off masterfully. That 80’s vibe, however, is beautifully balanced by a progressive rock aesthetic

Album Review: Turn Blue by The Black Keys

Source: The WRGW Music Blog

The Black Keys’ Turn Blue sounds like a collaboration between Pink Floyd, Broken Bells, Warren Haynes and Gary Clark Jr. The record is smooth yet punchy, with soul and disco dueling through its 11 songs. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like The Black Keys we’ve come to love. It’s been four years since their Big Come Up […]

Broken Bells – After The Disco

If Broken Bells’s self-titled debut album — which earned a Grammy nod back in 2011 — is any indication of what’s coming at us with their February 4th release of After the Disco, then we are all in for a treat. The first collaborative effort from Danger Mouse and the Shins’s James Mercer was chock full of catchy yet weighty pop tracks and fostered a cult favorite tribute to Hall and Oates — which we realize is hard to top — but the two excellent singles we’ve heard so far have lived up to our elite standards. ”Holding ...

TEEMID & Joie Tan – Crazy (Gnarls Barkley Cover)

Source: All Things Go

308_28697419697_2228_n

Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” was an irresistibly catchy earworm of a song way back in 2006. Singer Joie Tan and producer Teemid decided to dust it off and make us love it all over again. The most notable change on this cover is the general shift from the more funk based producing of Danger Mouse to the EDM style of Teemid. There’s a groovy bassline and thumping beat that wouldn’t be out of place on the original, but handclaps and synths, along with Tan’s partially looped vocals, form a new backbone for the song. Covers are supposed to expand on the ...

Broken Bells – Holding On For Life

Source: All Things Go

Broken Bells‘ forthcoming album is titled After the Disco. While that name could conceivably signal a change in direction for the hip hop influenced indie rock band, new song “Holding On For Life” should put those fears to rest. If anything, the track represents a further commitment to the style that drew praise for the well-pedigreed duo of James Mercer and Danger Mouse on their first album together in 2010. Opening with spacey UFO synths over a familiar Danger Mouse beat, Mercer cuts in with guitar strums and quietly ascending vocals until he bursts into the chorus. ...
