2018 got off to a very cold start in Coney Island, with temperatures topping out around 17 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold didn’t deter the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, who attracted hundreds to their annual New Year’s Day plunge, wearing costumes, bathing suits, and their clothes, to take a dip into the frigid Atlantic.
Memorial Day has come and gone, and summer will be here before we know it. That means beach trips, vacations, and pool days. A summer day is not complete without cold drinks, sunshine, and of course, music. Here are the top ten songs that need to be on your summer playlist!
Here’s some chill Friday vibes from South Korea’s Shindigs.
“I used to be in the band Clockart, which is now disbanded. But I’m always still writing and I’ve finally grew the courage to write vocals and record myself. Thought I might as well put some stuff out there, rather than waste them and never do anything with them, like a lot of my older songs. So i have some recently ghetto home recorded songs on bandcamp. The singing is really bad and I’m still learning, but it’s something I guess. I’m currently living in a beach city in South Korea (originally from California), so I like to think my sound has a mixture of Cali meets Asia (Japan, South Korea, a little Chinese). In fact, I was just at the beach tonight drinking beer and shooting roman candles. If you dig them, cool, if not, still cool! Cheers man.”
We’re still not entirely sure what Misun‘s self-imposed “Aquawave” tag means, but if it has anything to do with the island-pop sounds of their latest single “Travel With Me,” then we’re in. Long a staple of their live show, the single is a bubbly collection of steel drums, breezy keys and Misun Wojcik’s always-phenomenal vocals. Give it a listen below, and stay tuned for the band’s upcoming 7″, out February 18th via none other than B3Sci Records.
If Animal Collective spent more time on the beach, they would have sounded something like Vadoinmessico. Based in London, the global five-piece — whose members hail from Mexico, France, Italy and Austria — make free-spirited psych-pop blended with beachside melodies not unlike those woven by fellow globetrotters Trails and Ways. Their latest single “Perfect Strangers” is a trippy tropical number made for sunny days on the coast. Give it a listen below.
