An Allusively Haunting New Album and a Low-Key Neighborhood Gig by Dark Songwriter Jaye Bartell

Source: New York Music Daily

Gothic Americana crooner Jaye Bartell sings in a deadpan but rather guarded baritone. He plays with a ton of reverb on his guitar, whether with a steady clang or more sparsely. His songs don’t typically follow any kind of predictable verse/chorus pattern. On his latest album, In a Time of Trouble, a Wild Exultation – streaming at Bandcamp – he often just vamps along on a couple of major chords, vintage Velvets style. Which has a lulling effect…until he gets to the punchline, or the suspense in his hauntingly imagistic narratives builds to breaking point. Bartell is off on a ...

A banterous night with Angel Olsen (and Paul) at Union Transfer

Angel Olsen | photo by Tom Beck for WXPN

Gazing into the eyes of the audience like a cat who wants attention, Angel Olsen ever so slightly grazed the strings of her ’79 Gibson S-1 as she sung the words “I ain’t hanging up this time / I ain’t giving up tonight.”

The 1,200 people inside the sold-out Union Transfer sang it with Olsen, who was decked out like Lady Stardust, wearing a glammy and metallic one-piece spacesuit-looking outfit. It was the moment the audience had been waiting for, and they didn’t have to wait very long for it. After ...

During Angel Olsen’s show at Charlottesville’s Jefferson Theater last night, the Queen of Croon treated fans to a brooding cover of David Bowie’s “5 Years.”

Angel Olsen’s newly-released track, “Sans,” is a stripped and longing traveller’s ballad

Angel Olsen’s newly-released track, “Sans,” is a stripped and longing traveller’s ballad

Angel Olsen | photo by Jeremy Zimmerman for WXPN

Indie music world’s cool and crooning folk-rock Queen, Angel Olsen, is putting together some unreleased B-side tracks to make up a “new” 12-song album titled Phases. Out on November 10th via Jagjaguwar, the release will feature the already-shared single, “Special,” along with the latest track, “Sans.”

The title, meaning “without,” is a two-fold accurate description of the track; where “sans” reflects the song’s stripped nature as Olsen’s soft and vulnerable, yet still sturdy and assured, vocals provide the sole body of companionship to her restlessly traveling guitar. Likewise, the lyrics describe ...
