Video of The Day #373: SeRvo

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

The video for SeRvo‘s “Tree” is the stuff nightmares are made of. Unless, of course, you’re into the idea of being sacrificed at the stake to some unknown deity by mask-clad members of a secret society (or straight up cult). The song itself is a spooky, sinister mess of menacing psych snarl, capable of sending shivers up the spine. The Rouen outfit lays ...

Thanksgiving Chill Zones

I stupidly took my life in my hands last Sunday night when I made the mistake of going to the grocery store. Lost in some kind of holiday denying bubble, I was caught unawares by the cart pushing frenzy happening inside. Suddenly hunting and gathering felt dangerous again- like cave man times. Food was flying off the shelves. It was fight or flight, people! We who cringe during holiday mania need escape hatches. Thinking not too far outside the box of home and hearth,  below are places that feel like a comfortable little house party without the labor intensive in-laws ...

Newsflash!: Win Tickets to Gary Numan @ 9:30 Club, 12/9/17

You love going to shows. I love giving you tickets to shows. It’s a match made in heaven. Read on for how you can win some tickets.

I’ve been going to shows at the legendary 9:30 Club since I was a teenager, and have seen some of the best of the best grace that venerable stage. It is a pleasure to be offering a pair of tickets to the following upcoming 9:30/IMP show.

The iconic Gary Numan really doesn’t need much of an introduction, so I’ll keep it short. Numan is touring his latest recorded work, Savage (Songs From a ...

Singles Club: AUTOBAHN + Ezra Furman + Salad Boys

Consider Singles Club your musical matchmaker. I do hope you’ll give all these ready to mingle bachelors and bachelorettes your ear as you listen to some new favorite tunes. Read on in the hopes of finding your musical love connection.

The sound of a lit fuse, AUTOBAHN‘s “Execution/Rise” is a study in combative, willful noise. With a nod to the phoenix, the song’s message is described by the band as “a reference to being punished for one’s sins, but rising again.” A masterstroke of unexpectedly hip-shaking, industrial psych rebellion.

“I know the past is the past,” Furman sings, ...

Video of The Day #372: SAENTS

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Mondays very often call for sounds as savage and wolfish as “Blood.” Cure your case of the Mondays with SAENTS and this feral, howl-at-the-moon blues rock. The song’s video features a bevy of old footage, tweaked and manipulated to match these bruising sounds.

Singles Club: Cock & Swan + Dream Police + PINS

Consider Singles Club your musical matchmaker. I do hope you’ll give all these ready to mingle bachelors and bachelorettes your ear as you listen to some new favorite tunes. Read on in the hopes of finding your musical love connection.

Seattle’s Cock & Swan hits a bewitching bullseye with “Flock Descending,” a lusciously dark, noir synthpop treasure. Full of shadows, this  mesmeric slow burner is a standout.

It’s seriously hard to believe Dream Police is a side project. But when not doing good things with The Men, good things happen with Dream Police. New song “Revenge” is a nice ...

Singles Club: Dan Rico + Hovvdy + Small Reactions

Consider Singles Club your musical matchmaker. I do hope you’ll give all these ready to mingle bachelors and bachelorettes your ear as you listen to some new favorite tunes. Read on in the hopes of finding your musical love connection.

With a very T. Rex-esque kind of grimy glam swagger, Dan Rico‘s “Flesh & Bone” hits the spot. This Chicago fellow plays up the pop along with the grit, and the result is rather addictive.

Austin duo Hovvdy‘s ode to anxiety, hindsight, and understanding, “Late,” is ...

Holiday Gift Guide 2017: I Was Britpopped

We’ve all seen the onslaught of ads telling us that holiday shopping season has officially begun. Pressure to open they wallet as some kind of duty aside, presents are fun. And giving is a pretty great thing to do, so I’ve pulled together some ideas to bring a little seasonal joy to the life of your favorite music lover.

What to get the Britpop enthusiast in your life? May I suggest the new book I Was Britpopped? Written by Jenny Natasha and Tim Boniface-Webb, this tome covers the golden era of the 1990s when the UK was churning out ...

Crossing The Pond: BE GOOD + The Night Café + Party Hardly

Much great music is made on the other side of the Atlantic. Here your hostess indulges her love of all things Brit to bring you some songs you should be listening to from the British Isles.

Oxford has quite a reputation for education among all those dreaming spires, but “awkward pop” music? Absolutely. BE GOOD brings some serious late night slink to the party with their jam “Nightbus,” a song rife with come hitherness and all manner of potential misbehavior.

Liverpool’s The Night Café makes a heck of a pretty noise with their single “Turn.” This is a ...

Consider Singles Club your musical matchmaker. I do hope you’ll give all these ready to mingle bachelors and bachelorettes your ear as you listen to some new favorite tunes. Read on in the hopes of finding your musical love connection.

Influenced by the production stylings of Beatles and Beach Boys records, on “One More Shot” Alex Bloom manages to capture something timeless. A reminiscence of Bloom’s first heartbreak, the song carries a sense of lovelorn disappointment. It’s a tender, sweet effort, and shows a heck of a lot of promise.

Pacific Northwest twosome Crater keeps it supple and serpentine ...

Good Cover Version: Day Wave and Hazel English Do Interpol

Pulp gave the world the song “Bad Cover Version.” But seeing as I’m a sonic optimist, I’m of the belief that there’s more likely than not more good cover versions floating around than bad ones. Good Cover Version celebrates the good, and leaves all that bad and ugly stuff alone.

Interpol’s Turn On The Bright Lights was a big, big part of a certain time in my life, and it’s a treat to hear one of the biggest songs from that record given such a lovely reinterpretation. Frequent colleagues Day Wave and Hazel English joined forces vocally for the first time ...

Video of The Day #371: The Velveteins

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

“Strange Side of The Street” is a bit on the dreamy side, with delightful waves of fuzzy, scuzzed-out surf rock jangle capped with a bit of an instrumental freakout at the back end. The video for this gem from Edmonton’s The Velveteins, dedicated in loving memory to Jerry Garcia, sets the action smack in the middle of some California sunshine – art imitating ...

Video of The Day #370: New Candys

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Coming across like some kind of vintage avant garde film, the video for New Candys‘ “Tempera” may lead to a serious case of visual (not to mention aural) fixation. As the Venetian psychsmiths create foggy, sinister sinews of luxurious noise, the video’s simplicity makes both the song and video somehow feel more intense. Very highly recommended.

The Week In Shows: 11/20/17-11/26/17

A so very autumnal Saturday afternoon in November seems as good a time as any to plot ones weekly live music schedule, I think. Let’s take a look at what’s happening in the greater DC metro this week, shall we? Hot diggity!

Hard to believe Thanksgiving is next week, isn’t it? The year is winding down with alarming speed all of a sudden. I wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving, and hope you enjoy some turkey/tofurkey with folks you care about. Gigwise, it’s a lot thinner on the ground than it was last week, which is probably good ...

Video of The Day #369: Helen Kelter Skelter

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

The trippy, jarringly bright visuals for Helen Kelter Skelter‘s “Guud” make for quite a strong dose. It’s up to you whether you chemically enhance the experience, though you don’t really need to. The song itself is a hulking, heady listen, a far out and fantastical romp through heavy psych with a kick from the OK state.
