I’ve been working with the Los Angeles based musician Chris Howard who is better known as Hidden Mountains for as long as he’s been putting out music. He’s since put out his best record and I was so happy to be a part of it. His records have become more and more dense and complicated with each release. I never know what I am going to get when I am working with Chris. It keeps me on my feet and it keeps me wanting more. Be on the lookout for the LP to be ...

All That Ever Was

1 Ride The Snake

All That Ever Was is a rock band comprised of veterans from the Baltimore scene. Melodic guitar riffs in lockstep with pounding drums and serpentine bass complimenting dark undertones laced with dynamic vocals that keep you wanting more. Sometimes drowning you in sound and other times allowing the music to breathe.  There’s never a dull moment.

This is the third record I’ve worked on with this band. And they never stop to amaze me. They bring something new to the table each time they come in to record at Mobtown with ...

Andy Shankman, better know across this half of the Mississippi as the frontman for the electronic new wave rock band Jumpcuts will be releasing a limited edition 7” vinyl single this summer as a teaser to their sophomore album Fiber Optic Bondage due for release this coming fall. Following several national tours, singer and multi-instrumentalist Andy Shankman tracked the single as well as the album here at Mobtown Studios with producer Mat Leffler-Schulman.  The new album combines atmospheric synths with danceable beats, while Shankman’s introspective lyrics wield a bombastic rock experience not to ...

Space rock, alt rock, indie rock, post rock. Rock rock rock. Natural Velvet is everything. Their wiry, very aggressive and at time spacey guitars penetrate great songwriting and at times can get a little catchy possibly against their own will. I was really happy with how well this microshow came out. Not to mention how loud it was. Enjoy the show!

They are simple and complicated. Angular and round. And at the same time, completely catchy and accessible with a slight punk odor. When I saw them a second time, I was able to digest more and ...

She mixes a blend of 80s downtempo synth driven pop with modern moody dreamscapes. We all had a great time at her ...

Minimus The Poet

The newest release from Baltimore’s Minimus the Poet is an EP entitled Empathy. It was recorded at Mobtown Studios during a late-Winter snowstorm and was released digitally on May 26th during a late-Spring heat wave. Changing seasons is a fitting analogy for two reasons: this album showcases tremendous growth and development from previous releases (featuring some different band members), but the album itself also transitions and shifts in mood, tone, and perspective from song to song.

Full disclosure: I’m pretty biased. Minimus the Poet started as ...

Cruzie Beaux is Kristina Reznikov’s newest project. Kristina is the former singer/guitarist for the DC based Drop Electric and Blanche Has Friends. This new project is branching out from where she came from musically. It is certainly more dance-based and more electronic. But it grabs you where it counts. When I was first asked to mix this upcoming record the vibe of the rough mixes remind me of a lot of the Apollo 440 and Orbital sounds I heard in my younger years. And I couldn’t waste any time. It was something I was ...

If you give a listen to their first album Get Lost recorded here at Mobtown, you’ll notice indie/alt rock doesn’t quite capture the sounds of Baltimore’s Yo No Say, but you’d be hard pressed to come up with a better category in which to place them. Led by a formidable drummer and bassist, the energetic grooves of Yo No Say are unafraid to change, whilst maintaining a danceable feel. Riding these grooves, you’ll hear the chugging of guitars as readily as a delicate and often fast-paced guitar or keyboard melody. ...

It’s always the short-lived bands that mean the most to people. And Goblin Mold is no exception. Having only released a few records in a very short time we here at the studio feel like their life was cut short. That said, knowing when to call it is a skill to have.

We were lucky enough to have them in the studio for their microshow last summer. It was their second to last show, ever. Documented in it’s fullest. Enjoy it.

Hear Prince’s Tribute to Baltimore

Source: Mobtown Studios

Prince has always been political. He’s written about Reagan, drugs, sexuality, religion, gender. You name it, he’s hit it. It’s no surprise he has stepped it up and wrote a song about the racial inequality happening here in Baltimore. And “Baltimore” is no different here. It’s protest funk. Again, Prince is best when he’s redefining and setting trends…

10 Production Tips I Wish I Knew When I Started Recording Music

Source: Mobtown Studios

I’ve been writing my own music for over a decade and recording music for almost 2 decades. There is part of me that wishes I could send this letter to “Younger Mat”. But at the same time, the journey is sometimes the destination. This is something my wife, Emily, has to remind me about often.

  1. Check your mix at very low volumes. When you listen quietly you should hear what is most important in the song.
  2. Listen to pop music. Leave your ego at the door. One can learn something from anything. There is something to be said from learning ...

I’ve been good friends with Scott Siskind for many years. His band, Vinny Vegas, is one of my favorite band from Baltimore. He’s in the crowd of every show I go to. He’s good people. I was thrilled when he approached to ask me about recording an acoustic “demo” (his words) at Mobtown Studios.

I think that Vinny Vegas’ music is smart. There are a lot of moving pieces, and nothing they write or perform is boring. Working with Scott, and listening to his finished record, I am not surprised to feel ...

1 Friendly Encounter

I saw Joy Classic a few months ago for the first time at Metro Gallery down the street. They totally blew me away. I had never heard anything like this here in Baltimore. I felt there was something really special about them. There is something psychedelic and vintage about them, yet are still relevant and exciting. It’s still rock and roll with out all the overt and trite masculinity. And when we talked shortly after it was a match made in heaven. These guys were ready to make it happen in the studio. By whatever means ...
