Sivu – Dumb (Nirvana Cover)

British singer-songwriter Sivu gives us a dreamy pop take on Nirvana in his cover of “Dumb.” It’s hard to please when covering such an influential band, but going for one of the deeper cuts on In Utero was a good choice. Minimalist and modern, Sivu’s keyboard-driven version feels a more fitting tribute to Kurt Cobain than the hideous statue that was recently unveiled in Aberdeen.

Sivu’s newest EP Can’t Stop Now is out on iTunes via Warner Music UK. Stream “Dumb” below.

Brody Dalle – Don’t Mess With Me

After five years of relative silence, Brody Dalle has been anything but quiet lately. The former Spinnerette and Distillers frontwoman continues to drop ass-kicking singles from her upcoming solo debut, Diploid Love, out April 29th on Queen of Hearts/Universal. Today marked the release of “Don’t Mess With Me,” an addictive bad girl anthem that you’ll be screaming in your car all summer long, if you have any sense. Stream the track below, then pre-order Diploid Love on iTunes to instantly download the track.

Big Boi – Mother Of Dragons

Source: All Things Go

big-boi-game-of-thrones

Yesterday HBO announced Catch The Throne, a hip-hop mixtape inspired by Game Of Thrones featuring music from Common, Big Boi, Wale and Daddy Yankee. What better way is there to psych yourself up for GoT’s fourth season premiere on April 6th? Today we got the first taste of Catch The Throne with Big Boi‘s “Mother Of Dragons.” He seems to be #TeamTargaryen judging from this ode to the Khaleesi, with lines like, “Fuck the Lannisters and everybody that ride with ‘em” and “Targaryens, the rightful bloodline / So don’t you worry about the Red Wedding, that made ...

TacocaT – Crimson Wave

Source: All Things Go

Seattle’s TacocaT is spelled the same backwards and forwards. The four-piece punk band has been putting out upbeat music with a sense of humor since 2008, but they’ve topped themselves with their new music video for “Crimson Wave.” Invoking a pivotal line from Clueless, “Crimson Wave” is about exactly what it sounds like. The video is a fun surf throwback, featuring green screen waves, giant crabs, mermaids and plenty of inventive euphemisms (I think my favorite is “There are communists/In the summer house.”) It’s another great addition to any period playlist.

Tacocat’s new full-length NVM comes out ...

Brody Dalle – Meet The Foetus/Oh The Joy

Source: All Things Go

brody

The first time I saw Brody Dalle, she was still Brody Armstrong, and The Distillers were playing one of the opening sets of Lollapalooza 2003. Her hair was filthy and her voice was a growl, and she didn’t seem to care if anyone was even listening. The last time I saw Brody Dalle, she was blonde and talking about motherhood on The Conversation, a female-driven interview show formerly on Lifetime.

A lot can happen in ten years, but Dalle remains of my absolute favorites. Yesterday she released “Meet The Foetus/Oh The Joy,” the first single off her upcoming solo debut. ...

Kelis – Rumble

Source: All Things Go

food

Ever since her single “Jerk Ribs” came out last year, I’ve been hungry for more of FOODKelis’s upcoming new album produced by Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio). I’ll be the first to admit that before her new tracks, I wrote Kelis off as the “Milkshake” girl, surely a one-hit wonder left to moulder in oversexed obscurity. That was a mistake. A big one. Kelis has moved on from milkshakes to more nourishing fare, with influences including classic soul, funk and a Harlem childhood spent singing in church choirs. It turns out that these suit her immensely better, ...

Lowell – 88

Source: All Things Go

lowell 88

I really recommend reading Lowell’s Facebook bio in full, because it’s a fascinating read, but I’ll summarize in case you don’t have time. Lowell is a Canadian, a feminist, a LGBTQ activist and a DIY/hands-on pop artist, so let’s kill the comparisons right now. 1) M.I.A., because of her activism and beats; 2) Grimes, because of her Canadianness and control over her work; 3) Passion Pit, for their upbeat, high-pitched electronic pop. The last quality is featured prominently on her new single “88,” an earworm off her upcoming EP I Killed Sara V., out February 25th via Arts & Crafts ...

St. Vincent – Digital Witness

Source: All Things Go

Annie E. Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, has said that the theme of her new album’s cover art is “near-future cult leader.” Though St. Vincent doesn’t officially arrive until February 24th, we can get a better idea of what that means in today’s music video for “Digital Witness.” Clark appears as a mod cult leader in a geometrically-pleasing compound with followers moving eerily in synch with the beat of the song. The horns on the track and the gray hair she’s rocking both seem to be influenced by her recent collaboration with David Byrne, of Love This Giant. If ...

CHVRCHES – Bela Lugosi’s Dead (Bauhaus Cover)

Source: All Things Go

chvrches

The mainstreaming of goth culture is something I’ve been following with great interest, so when I heard that CHVRCHES released a cover of Bauhaus’s “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” I couldn’t wait to hear what they’d done with it. Apparently it’s part of the soundtrack for Vampire Academy, a teen horror-comedy about a Hogwarts for vampires. In that sense it works beautifully; it’s a pop song about a famous vampire from a super hot young band, sure to please teens and CHVRCHES fans alike.

But as a tribute to a haunting and iconic goth anthem? Ehhh, not so much. I’m surprised the producers ...

Metronomy – Love Letters

Metronomy-Love-Letters

I love any new song that reminds me of The Supremes, so obviously I was psyched when Metronomy released the title track for their new album Love Letters. It’s an energetic rock song with a doo-wop chorus, just in time for your Valentine’s Day playlists. What’s more, Michel Gondry is said to be directing the music video. Those Europeans are always in cahoots with each other.

Love Letters is the band’s fourth studio album and you can pre-order it on iTunes now. Stream the title track below.

Disclosure – F For You (Ft. Mary J. Blige)

Source: All Things Go

Because everything is better with a little Mary J., Disclosure released a video for the very Mary remix of their song “F For You.” It’s a combo of animation and live action studio shots where Mary is styled like a hip-hop Suze Orman (I’m sorry, but the jacket and side-swooping bangs are a dead ringer). She certainly made a smart choice by working with these guys; Disclosure recently topped the BRIT Awards with four nominations, including the prestigious and prominently branded MasterCard British Album of the Year Award for 2013′s Settle. If this video doesn’t make you nostalgic for ’90s house ...

Phantogram – Nothing But Trouble

Source: All Things Go

In the year of the surprise album, there’s something to be said for the joys of anticipation. Take Phantogram for example, who just released the fourth single from their upcoming sophomore record Voices, out February 18th on Republic Records. Like the songs that dropped before it, “Nothing But Trouble” is a smooth, synthy track that begs to be played with the lights off. It’s the perfect music for winter, and I officially can’t wait for this record. Check out “Nothing But Trouble” above, or pre-order Voices on iTunes for a free download.

Del The Funky Homosapien – Iller Than Most

Del-The-Funky-Homosapien-Iller-Than-Most-608x814

Did Beyoncé start a chain reaction with her surprise album? Since Bey Day on December 13th we’ve seen surprise releases from the LOX, Pixies and Del The Funky Homosapien, who released his free, self-produced Iller Than Most LP on Soundcloud yesterday. It’s a playful, minimalist record with elements of horror and sci-fi that feels heartier than its 34 minutes. “Mental Fitness” throws down some serious lyrical gymnastics, while “Boogieman” shows off Del’s silly side. If 2014 is full of free, fan-oriented albums like this one, it’s going to be a great year. Stream the whole album after the ...

Beyonce – Drunk in Love (Ft. Jay-Z)

Source: All Things Go

Anyone who hasn’t recognized the release of Beyoncé as a huge moment in music just doesn’t get it. It’s about a female African-American artist taking her power and letting the world know that the rules don’t apply to her. Beyoncé Knowles doesn’t have to “leak” her songs, scandalize us at the VMAs or drive a gold truck around L.A. to sell millions of records, because she’s not putting out that mediocre stuff. How often does someone proclaim that they’re the greatest and they’re actually right?

Knowles has said that she chose her unorthodox surprise release because she wanted people to invest ...

Phantogram – Fall In Love

Now is that weird time of year when we’re equally encouraged to reminisce about the best of 2013 and put a down payment on a 2014 Ford C-Max. Phantogram has ensured that we’ll have something to look forward to next year with “Fall In Love,” the first single off their upcoming full-length Voices, out February 18th on Republic. It’s a dramatic synth-tinged jam that’s perfect for these dark winter days. You can pre-order Voices on iTunes. It comes with an MP3 of “Fall In Love,” which you can also listen to above.

Icona Pop – Just Another Night

Source: All Things Go

Icona Pop have been putting out reliable party anthems for a while now, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Doing only one thing and doing one thing well are very different propositions. Icona Pop do what they do so well, in fact, that they’ll be joining both Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry on their respective tours in 2014. In their new video for “Just Another Night,” the Swedish pop duo fights malaise with a French New Wave-inspired love triangle. It’s a dance floor ballad that walks around town all night and finally meets up in the same club as “I ...

Introducing: Decent Lovers

Source: All Things Go

decent

There’s an inventiveness to music that doesn’t come from big cities. Over the years, my friend Kyle has sent me tons of great indie pop from his hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, bands he’s seen in converted barns and other small, well-loved venues. Decent Lovers‘ latest song “Keep It Together” instantly reminded me of these Southern hometown bands, so I felt vindicated to learn that they hail from North Carolina as well (Asheville, specifically). “Keep It Together” is a joyful love song with group vocals recorded in someone’s house, and if that doesn’t cheer you up, well, that’s on ...

Ty Segall – The Man Man

Source: All Things Go

At the risk of jumping the gun, I’m going to admit that my favorite album of 2013 so far is Ty Segall‘s Sleeper. The LP represents a stylistic break from the noisy psych rock in which Segall’s been so prolific, and is a concise record of imaginative acoustic songs about death, nightmares and break-ups.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting a music video from Sleeper for the past few months. I guess he was busy touring the country and recording another full-length album with his band Fuzz, but pshhh. That’s taking it easy for Ty Segall. The video has finally arrived ...

Introducing: Carnivore Club

Source: All Things Go

537931_309214735886851_2106837264_n

The first thing you must know about Carnivore Club is that it shares its name with a Canadian meat subscription company. You must know this to be sure you’re seeking out the band, a solo project from Judas And The Winehearts’ singer/guitarist Arend Bruchwitz. His folk-infused pop music calls to mind the zeitgeisty indie bands of my college years, when Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and Andrew Bird were at their most exciting.

Carnivore Club’s self-titled debut EP can be found on Bandcamp and iTunes, and is surely as good an investment as a monthly subscription of rare meats. Stream it now below.

Billie Joe & Norah – Long Time Gone (Everly Brothers Cover)

“You’ll never guess who’s in this duet,” I said.

“Tyler Perry.”

“Okay, maybe it’s not actually that weird.” Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and Norah Jones have teamed up to cover the 1958 Everly Brothers record Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, a collection of traditional country songs. (Nope, still pretty weird.) The two met at the Grammys several years ago but didn’t join forces until Armstrong had the itch to cover the Everly Brothers with a female vocalist. Thus was born Foreverly, an album of duets to be released on Reprise Records November 25th, right in time for the ...

Tigercub – Mother

Source: All Things Go

Is a grunge revival on the way? With a new Pearl Jam record out and Johnny Knoxville dressing like a grandpa, anything’s possible. Brighton’s Tigercub seem prepared for the flannel renaissance with their new single “Mother.” You can definitely hear the (teen) spirit of certain ’90s bands in well-placed screaming and detached/clever lyrics like, “If love is blind, I am dumb.” Tigercub also released a video for “Mother” that reminds me of my favorite holographic school folders. Watch the video above or stream the song below.

Childish Gambino – 3005

Source: All Things Go

childish gambino

Rappers can be moody fucks. Just look at Childish Gambino, a.k.a. Donald Glover of Community. Last week he Instagrammed a series of fears and self-doubts he’d written on hotel stationary, including, “I’m afraid people hate who I really am,” and “I’m afraid I’ll never reach my potential.” Glover also commented on the new Childish Gambino record in this format, revealing, “The label doesn’t want me to release in December because it’s not a holiday record and I’m not a big artist.”

Apparently Glassnote Records has changed their mind, because today Childish Gambino’s Because The Internet got a release date, ...

Pop Quiz: Bangerz vs. LIZZOBANGERS

Two of the most buzzworthy albums of the year were released this month in Miley Cyrus’s Bangerz and Lizzo’s LIZZOBANGERS, to different ends. You might think that a female rapper on the verge of a major breakthrough has little in common with a country singer’s daughter known for grinding on MTV, but these two artists can actually be quite difficult to tell apart. Test your knowledge of Lizzo and Miley with the trivia quiz after the jump, and perhaps you can answer the eternal question: which banger bangs the bangingest?

Postiljonen – All That We Had Is Lost (Keep Shelly In Athens Remix)

There’s something about those Swedes. I don’t know if it’s the herring or the affordable modern furniture, but they keep putting out creative pop music. Take Swedish dream pop trio Postiljonen, who borrowed from Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” on their single “All That We Had Is Lost.” For their upcoming EP of the same name, they handed off their track for three very different remixes. Keep Shelly In Athens took one and found a darker, moodier song more fitting to lyrics about loss. Misun – Goodbye Sasha

Do you know how to say “goodbye” in Russian? Google says it’s do svidaniya, but for pronunciation simply turn to Misun’s upbeat new single “Goodbye Sasha.” It’s a cheerful romp from the DC aquawave band along the lines of “It’s A Small World,” if the robots popped off and broke it down halfway through the ride. Stream it below.

I, for one, can’t wait to bust a move to this at All Things Go’s CMJ Showcase next week. Oh, haven’t you heard? ATG Presents: Hit Parade is happening on Wednesday, October 16th at the Brooklyn Bowl, and in addition ...
