With the recent release of their sophomore album “New Moody Judy,” Brooklyn post punk rockers Honey deliver an aggressive collection of fuzz guitar-fueled songs.  Opener “Wage Agreement” is propelled by a furious power trio wall of sound featuring an ominously tense bending guitar part and half pleading/half shouting vocals, reminiscent of early Richard Hell.  Follow-up “Dream Come ...

Ahead of the October 6th release of their new single “Shadow Side,” Brooklyn art rockers Veda Rays are premiering in our blog the video for the record’s titletrack (streaming below).  The single marks the band’s first recorded material since 2014, and serves up a mix of organs, open electric guitar chords, and percussive tour-de-force, pulsating under deep, dramatic vocals.  With images of faces crossfading with ominous looking trees, the video introduces a lugubrious, dreamlike atmosphere. While the song progresses to deliver an ample hook in the chorus, the mood remains dark and mysterious, with the video now showing dark, full body figures with covered faces and rabbit masks, and a shrouded female dancer, all in white.  Referring back to the track’s title, the band describes this symbolism as “a subliminal reaction to the projection of our collective shadow.”  “Shadow Side” will be released on their own Alleged Records imprint. – Dave Cromwell

After releasing their debut full length album “Human Ceremony” in early 2016, Brooklyn psych rockers Sunflower Bean (who graced the cover of The Deli’s 40th issue back in 2014) dropped a four song EP towards the end of that same year. Featuring cover versions of four distinct artists, “From the Basement” serves as homage to the bands diverse influences. “Old World” finds Nick Kivlen impressively channeling Jonathan Richman’s vocal phrasing and attitude on that Modern Lovers classic. A keyboard part find its way into the band’s three-piece sound, a very necessary addition in this circumstance. The country waltz of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” (also featuring an organ part, streaming below) benefits from Julia Cummings sweet voice, the way Joni Mitchell might have interpreted it in the 1970’s. “Shine A Light” captures the floating in a dream vibe Spiritualized is known for, while T Rex’s “Life’s A Gas” is turned around by another Julia vocal. Sunflower Bean will play a number of key festivals soon and support the PIXIES on tour including local shows on 9/22 in Westbury and 9/23 in Asbury Park. – Dave Cromwell

At the end of 2016, psychedelic rockers gods released the first new tracks since their outstanding debut EP Endless Stunner (reviewed on The Deli here).  Epic track “Wash” (streaming below) builds off the lyrical hook “I got a feeling that I can’t believe.”  Exotic sounding guitar parts set a middle-eastern sitar vibe – or is that really a sitar? A powerful, droney bass, slashing cymbals and stomping drums conjure up an image of a caravan marching across mystical desert landscapes.  Deliberate and methodical, elaborate progressive instrumental sections reveal a tight interplay.  “Wash away this light that shines on me” becomes the emotional takeaway, as a dominant guitar lick mingling with whooshy rising synth rushes concludes this journey.  While gods have no live dates listed at the moment, parent band The Parlor Mob (which include a number of the same members) will headline the Saturday portion of Asbury Parks upcoming Indian Summer Fest next month. – Dave Cromwell

“When that synth hits you just right” is the descriptive tagline Brooklyn duo Pleasure Prince displays on their Instagram account.  That is certainly a fitting description for a sound that weaves pulsating keys with an emotionally soulful pop vocal sensibility. On their slow groove track "You Look Good To Me" (streaming below) a mood of heightened sensual attraction pervades the soundscape, as hooky synth lines and electronic percussion take hold.  Other tracks like “Lines for George” feature reverberated female vocals that echo the sweetness and retro-futuristic sci-fi edge of the much beloved Broadcast.  However “Evening Queen” surprises by removing the synths, allowing the lushly produced alternating male and female vocals to take center stage.  Pleasure Prince play next on 4/22 at Don Pedro. – Dave Cromwell

Readying their follow-up release to 2014 debut record “Sighs,” Overlake share “Winter Is Why” (streaming below) from sophomore album “Fall” due out May 12th via Bar/None Records. The track emerges via a guitar figure delivered with orchestral sensibility, creating an immediate mood of majestic grandeur.  Forceful power trio drumming and counterpoint descending bass tones further punctuate unexpected rhythmic accents underneath this rising melody. Settling in to calmer patterns, dreamy vocals describe how the “summer sun hangs around” and “windswept cones on the sand” suggest the winter season.  This over five minute long track successfully blends the quieter passages of gazey icons My Bloody Valentine (think “Come In Alone”) with that band’s more explosive and pitch-bendy moments. While still finalizing dates for an April tour, the band has scheduled a record release show at Mercury Lounge on May 12th with support from local favorites Dead Stars and Heaven. – Dave Cromwell

Is it absolutely necessary to spend Valentine’s Day listening to "romantic" and mellow music? Brooklyn rockers NoPop answer "no’ to that question, by premiering their sophomore 7 track EP “Demons” exclusively here on The Deli. Describing their music as "pink punk, zoo-music, moxy-rock," the band combines driving rhythms and softer pop together in a hyper-crazed mix embracing unhinged wildness.  “Wear The Feeling” taps into Surfer Rosa era Pixies with similar distorted screaming vocals. The under two minutes “Holly” – one of our favorites – chugs along with perky energy as female vocals find the sweet spot between Kim Deal’s charmingly intoxicated sounding lines and bigger girl group background harmonies. “Huffers” is supported by a heavy fuzz bass, alternating chant vocals and shifting snare shot punctuation.  “Number One” pairs syncopated drumming and metal guitar phrasings with alternating hyper-angst vocals and softer passages. First single “Rules” builds off a steady bass guitar pulse before launching into a full cinematic explosion. The near 7 minute “Frederick Fleet” serves as an epic final track. Demons was mixed, engineered, and co-produced by Julian Cubillos of 77 Linden, and mastered by NY legend Kramer, whose work includes the Pulp Fiction’s soundtrack, Half-Japanese and Butthole Surfers. – Dave Cromwell
