Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire — I Ain’t Even Fuck Rihanna

Source: All Things Go

mr muthafuckin exquire i aint even fuck rihanna

We were all taught as children never to judge a book by its cover, but when a rapper named Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire drops a single with a title as grabby as “I Ain’t Even Fuck Rihanna (bka One For Lime-A-Rita Papi),” it’s hard not to indulge in that which makes an ass of U-M-E. We expect a walleyed banger in the proud tradition of Le1f’s excellent “Wut,” spewing loopy quotables with every bar. Instead, eX breaks off a thick brick of old-school East Coast gold. We hear bodegas, brownstones and baggies in the dusty piano sample. By the time he ...

GirlsOnDrugs — Party Talk

Source: All Things Go

girlsondrugs

For the first twenty seconds, “Party Talk,” the new single from Leeds duo GirlsOnDrugs, sounds like a pretty shameless Purity Ring ripoff. Percussive synth pings — check. Creeping electronic mist — check. Nothing to see here, move along. But at the twenty-second mark, GirlsOnDrugs unleash their secret weapon: Kat McHugh’s arresting, mournful vocals. She sounds like she’s lived for a million years, centuries of aching wisdom forming the foundation of her haunting voice. The other half of GirlsOnDrugs is non-girl Luke Lount, who provides an adequately eerie backdrop against which McHugh’s voice can shine. Apparently we can’t take the band ...

Wild Cub — The Mother We Share (CHVRCHES Cover)

Source: All Things Go

It seems like the glut of covers set out to shrink or expand the original, either stripping down a grander production or inflating an intimate song to epic proportions. Glasgow synth-pop outfit CHVRCHES’ debut single, “The Mother We Share,” was a skyscraper of towering catharsis, the one true heir to the anthemic throne that M83 claimed with “Midnight City.” Where the original stretched stories high, this cover from Nashville quintet Wild Cub occupies a cozier, quieter space. Lead vocalist Keegan DeWitt warbles out Lauren Mayberry’s moment-of-truth lyrics in an ursine growl, coming off like the poor man’s Justin Vernon. ...

Will Eastman – Nikkei

Source: Blisspop » DC Music

Blisspop resident Will Eastman unveiled today his latest release via Main Course—a roaring one-tracker which the prolific producer/DJ has graciously made available as a free download to all. “Nikkei,” a tune which Eastman himself has rather aptly dubbed as “cosmic house,” shows the artist again in supreme form. Beginning with crisp hats, celestial synths and muted snares, the track quickly transitions from galactic exploration toward a thunderous four-on-the-floor romp. As the pace picks up, menacing stabs complement airy pads and a twisted, nearly unintelligible vocal sample which somehow manages to cling to one’s memory. After a serene recess, the track ...

Lorde – Ribs (Caleb L’Etoile Remix)

Source: Blisspop » DC Music

The inaugural offering in Blisspop’s exclusive download series comes courtesy of our very own contributor, Caleb L’Etoile. L’Etoile has quickly been making a name for himself in the DMV for his unique synthesis of house, indie dance and UK bass–all the while DJing some of the area’s finest clubs and events. The tune, a remix of Lorde’s “Ribs,” comes complete with the same ethereal textures which make the original shine, yet takes an unexpected turn toward the dancefloor as the hook-laden chorus and infectious groove begin to dominate. The track eventually erupts into a luscious soundscape with melodic vocals abound before ...
