To paraphrase David Lynch, Always With You, the first music video by Main (aka David Maine of Frankie Cosmos) is not what it seems. Although the flashing Chinatown signs, dimly lit studio apartment, and attractive young people on bikes running in slo-mo set the perfect setting for a fashionable story, something seems off. In every space he ...

Bad Night With a Familiar Haunt

Source: New York Music Daily

With his big protruding ears, thin face, brushy caterpillar moustache beneath a long nose and no chin, he would have been called a jarhead sixty years ago. Over blue jean shorts and docksiders with no socks, he’s wearing what appears to be a high school letterman’s jacket embroidered with a Middle Eastern airline logo. On his neck is a tattoo of a large rodent – a muskrat? A possum, maybe? having sex with a pig. He’s talking to his two twentysomething companions in a loud, nasal, petulant voice, as if to make himself heard over background noise. Except that there’s ...

Philly’s Church Girls drop “Better Off,” a glorious preview of Hidalgo

Church Girls | photo courtesy of churchgirls.bandcamp.com

Philly-based indie rock quartet Church Girls is gearing up to release their second album, Hidalgo, on September 15th. Front woman Mariel Beaumont’s knack for frequenting basement shows and drinking 40’s in her teenage years seems to have seeped into her guitar-forward, rough-around-the-edges songwriting; melodic electric guitar work and snappy drum riffs are at the core of “Better Off,” a preview from the new record.

If it’s any indication of the rest of the album, maybe we’re in for more pop than punk. The band initially turned heads with their debut EP in 2015, ...

Just Announced: Hardwork Movement will headline Underground Arts on 9/15

Hardwork Movement | photo by Danny Gevirtz | courtesy of the artist | via instagram.com/dannygevirtz

Okay, seriously, can we talk for a minute about how great Hardwork Movement was at XPNFest yesterday? From the opening “City Bars” to a freestyle over an Anderson.Paak bassline, Chill Moody and Joie Kathos joining in to cover Future and the always incredible closer “Living Legend,” the Philly hip-hop crew brought a ridiculous amount of energy to the Marina Stage for only 12:30 in the afternoon. (Seriously — listen back here.)

The good news is it doesn’t end there.Hardwork Movement just announced their biggest ...

Mitski expands tour, played Panorama (review)

Calling her set transcendent might be a bit of an overstatement, but as the camera panned over the audience and revealed all the glassy eyes, there was a sense that Mitski’s music is something bigger than the woman behind it…

NY-based PAWNS serves up harrowing post-punk that’s just itching to darken your day. Their latest release, Gallows, is 10 evil-sounding tracks that manage to navigate an aesthetic that’s at once grim yet infectiously danceable. With simple, bouncy melody lines, and reverberating vocals that sound as if they were recorded from beyond the grave, Gallows is the LP to ...

WXPN’s Gotta Hear Song of the Week: “My Only True Friend” by Gregg Allman

On “My Only True Friend,” the first new song by Gregg Allman from his forthcoming posthumous album, he sings “I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul when I’m gone.” It’s a bittersweet emotional tug given his passing on May 27th.

The album, Southern Blood, comes out September 8th, was produced by Don Was, and recorded with Allman’s touring band and special guests Jackson Browne, Buddy Miller, The McCrary Sisters and Greg Leisz. Recorded at Fame studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the song is reflective of Allman’s long standing career with the ...
