Couldn’t get into Tash Sultana’s sold-out World Cafe Live gig? She’s playing Union Transfer in the fall

Melbourne singer-songwriter Tash Sultana has captured our attention in a big way here at WXPN HQ, from a spotlight on Mike Vasilikos’ New Music Show to start off 2017 to appearing in World Cafe’s Sense of Place: Melbourne series.

Seems like Sultana had a similar effect on everybody else, at about the same time no less — as soon as we found out, we also found out her show at World Cafe Live upstairs is very sold out, just like the rest of her short winter U.S. tour. Fear not, though — Sultana just ...

Meet Open City: Philly punk scene vets raging with abandon

Open City | photo courtesy of the artist

Long running members of the Philadelphia hardcore punk scene got together this year to make new music under the Open City banner; the album, self-released today, is a fierce kick of energized outrage, deftly delivered by a crew with decades of experience under their belt.

Rachel Rubino of Bridge & Tunnel and Worriers fronts the band with gut-wrenching vocals and incisive lyrics; Andy Nelson and Dan Yemin from Paint it Black (and various others) play bass and guitar respectively, with Yemin on guitar for the first time since his Kid Dynamite days; ...

Dave Hause | Photo by Jesse DeFlorio

When he was hard at work on his third solo album, and wrestling with a bout of writer’s block, singer, songwriter, guitarist and rocker Dave Hause unlocked the key to finishing his album, when he decided to record it in Philly, his birthplace and where he grew up.

Hause releases his new album, Bury Me In Philly, this Friday, February 3rd. On it, he enlisted some familiar names to record it with. Co-produced by Eric Bazilian (The Hooters), who plays guitar, and William Wittman (David Uosikkinen’s In The Pocket) on bass and ...

Genre-mixing pros Issues bring triple-headliner to The Fillmore

Issues | photo by Tiana Timmerberg for WXPN

This winter’s The End Is Here tour brought together metalcore bands Issues, Motionless In White and Falling In Reverse — and the show stopped at The Fillmore Philadelphia on Saturday, January 28. With tastes of EDM, pop, R&B and even country sprinkled into the three headliners’ and two openers’ setlists, there was a little bit of something to satisfy everyone at this show. Despite all the genres that were present, head-bangning, mosh-pit encouraging music was the clear, overall theme and Motionless In White’s desire for everyone to leave the show with a “bangover” (bangover, ...

With an old-school surf aesthetic, and some serious bad bitch vibes, the Saylavees are laying down totally dreamy garage rock. The NYC-based band features three-part vocal harmonies that feel both dulcet and haunting, and pair perfectly to their fuzzy guitar sounds and punchy beats. Think black sands and night-time, summer drives with the windows down, and you’ve captured some of the mystic surrounding the group. Check them out live at Union Pool 2/11 with Alana ...

LVL UP is a band that seems to be on everyone’s radar, especially since recently signing to Sub Pop records and releasing Return to Love, their newest record in September. Now currently on tour with Cloud Nothings, it seems like the Brooklyn band just keeps growing – along with their crowd sizes!
