Singles Club: Bloody Death Skull

As with books and their covers, we’ve all been taught not to judge a band by its name.

That being said, it’s completely and totally understandable if you saw the name Bloody Death Skull and started to expect black/doom/stoner metal. That is not, however, what you’ll hear from the LA art-surf outfit.

In “Betsy’s Back” you’re going to get an earful of kooky, playful, catchy as all get-out, 60s girl group meets surf scuzz shenanigans. And if you’re like me, you’ll take one listen to this little nugget and keep going back for more.

Video of The Day #188 – Halloween Edition: Lily & Madeleine

Video of The Day #188 - Halloween Edition: Lily & Madeleine

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

It’s Halloween, so what better time to scope out Lily & Madeleine‘s video for “Westfield”? The video’s teen slasher flick feel is even more shiveringly acute when paired with the dreamy, honeyed vocals of the ladies and the slow, steady burn of the song.  Oh, and be ready for a heck of a twist at the end. Trick or treat, indeed.

A Deli NYC Haloween video premiere: Sonya Glass - 'Flicker'

Sonya Glass’s new video for "Flicker" is the perfect opportunity to get your Halloween off to a spooky start. Well shot and featuring a comprehensible story-line, the video depicts Glass as the vengeful spirit of a haunted house, posessing the souls of all those who enter. Clearly drawing inspiration from horror films and shows like "American Horror Story," Glass and co. do their source material justice. The song matches the quality of the video as well, with Glass’s strong vocals driving the track, which lands in an intriguing noir-Americana territory. For those in the mood for something spooky ...

Morricone Youth Slay Zombies in Williamsburg

Source: New York Music Daily

It’s hard to imagine a better way to cap off Halloween month than watching Morricone Youth play a live score to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Backs to the crowd, gamelan style, so they could follow every split-second cue onscreen, the band’s performance this past evening at Nighthawk Cinema in Williamsburg was a lot more entertaining than the movie. From the applause afterward, one suspects that the sold-out audience agreed.

The score is just out and available on limited edition neon green vinyl, the inaugural release in an ambitious series of fifteen soundtracks to the midnight movies ...

The true test of a Halloween song is less the scare-factor (though that’s important) but also the endurance factor. In other words, how well will this piece of music hold up the other eleven months of the year? The Specials’ “Ghost Town,” RJD2’s “The Horror,” Ryan Adams’ “Halloweenhead” — prime examples of Halloween-centric songs with round-the-calendar relevance. Tracy Morgan’s “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah”? Not so much.

Today, Philly rapper S.T.S. teamed up once again with his regular production partner Khari Mateen for a new cut called “Horror ...
