Sounds of Secret Stages 2016 #5: Greater Pyrenees

It’s sweltering out there, which can only mean it’s getting to be about time for the 2016 installment of Alabama’s awesome little music festival, Secret Stages. In a mere few days, a bunch of great local/regional/further afield bands will descend on Birmingham for what promises to be a heck of a good time. (Once again) I won’t be there, dangit, but here’s who I think is really worth checking out from the excellent lineup.

There’s a whole lot to like about Mississippians Greater Pyrenees. The brainchild of Sean Kirkpatrick, the Pyrenees sound is like stumbling across memories and ...

Avers Bring Their Catchy, Psychedelically-Tinged New Album to the Mercury

Source: New York Music Daily

To what degree does allusiveness and indirectness describe Richmond band Avers‘ sound? Pretty well. Beyond having not one but four songwriters, they distinguish themselves with their sense of humor, exuberantly referencing and mashing up styles that date back as far as the 70s. Adrian Olsen, Alexandra Spalding, James Mason, and JL Hodges share vocals as well as their songs, with multi-instrumentalist Charlie Glenn pitching in on keys and guitar. They’re playing the album release show for their new one, Omega Whatever – soon to be streaming at Bandcamp – on August 4 at 10:30 PM at the Mercury; adv ...

After wowing XPN Fest, RoseMary Fiki shares new single “I Got It”

RoseMary Fiki | Photo by Cameron Pollack | cameronpollackphotography.com

Coming off of a killer XPN Fest set last weekend, local artist RoseMary Fiki has shared a new single called “I Got It.” Inspired by her heritage and a love of pop songs, the track pays homage to Fiki’s Nigerian ancestry through the lens of club-ready dance music.

As we learned at XPoNential, the Philadelphia artist is a natural performer. Her confidence and fiery personality come through both on stage an in her recordings, and “I Got It” takes that to a whole new level. Classic hip hop scratches give way to ...

Line Leader don’t burst our bubble with new DIY track “Bubblegum”

Line Leader | via Bandcamp

While the guys in Line Leader continue working on their first full length since 2014’s Seeds, they gave us a preview of what’s to come by sharing one of the new songs on their Bandcamp page last week. The Philly lo-fi trio served up “Bubblegum,” a not so sugary sweet track unlike its goopy, pastel namesake. The bare bones song features a washed out, beach vibe overtop somewhat sinister lyrics (“Nobody noticed when the sickness came creepin’ back in / By your diagnosis I’ll be sleeping in the house of sin tonight.”)

New York electronica outfit Brazilian Girls headline at The Foundry tonight. Since their debut in 2005, the four-piece has gotten a lot of notoriety for their ability to blend electronic dance sounds with a multitude of genres, such as tango, for example. It’s an exciting time for the band, as they’re set to release their first album in eight years. Listen to their recent funky single  “The Critic” below, and stop by the XPN Concert Calendar for tickets to tonight’s all ages show.

Otherwise Engaged: Boogarins

It is an unfortunate reality for the serious concertgoer that on occasion, there will be more than one show on any given night that you really, really, REALLY wanna go to. Since the vast majority of us don’t own a time machine, nor have the ability to either clone ourselves or split ourselves in half (or thirds or quarters depending on the night in question), this tends to present a problem. Difficult decisions are made based on a variety of variables (perhaps some of you even make lists of pros and cons), and ultimately, a show is chosen. But those ...

(Once again) I won’t be there, dangit, but here’s who I think is really worth checking out from the excellent lineup.

I’m pretty sure Wieuca (pronounced why-you-ku) is the first band I’ve come across that self-identifies as “Post-sensual Trap Metal.” These Athens-by-way-of-Atlanta boys aren’t really metal, ...

Video Of The Day #150: Ancient Cities

Video Of The Day #150: Ancient Cities

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

There’s something amusing but a little scary about the Ancient Cities video for “Marmalade.” After all, a world where music is illegal isn’t a world I care to think too much about. Premise aside, the all-lady cast does a hilariously great job acting out both a band up to no good and the cops that are antagonizing them. As for the song itself, well, it’s ...

On The Road Again: Teenage Fanclub

This bit of news brings me much joy, and I hope it’ll do the same for you. The one and only Teenage Fanclub, purveyors of the dreamiest Scots jangle for many years now, will be heading back to the States for their first US shows since 2014.

Check the dates below. And also be sure you check out their clip for the delightfully lovely “I’m In Love,” which is the first Fannies video since 2001 that actually features the band. Happy days!

The Manhattan Camerata Bring Their Lush, Stormy Tango-Fado Project to Lincoln Center Out of Doors

Source: New York Music Daily

If you can’t resist epic string charts, stormy neoromantic minor-key melodies and elegantly angst-ridden female vocals, you will love the Manhattan Camerata‘s Tango-Fado Project, streaming at their music page. The premise is to connect the dots between Argentine tango and Portuguese fado music. Which makes sense, considering that tango was originally guitar music, just like fado, and how much the two styles have been transformed over the years – and how much sadness and drama and smoldering fire that each still channels. The Manhattan Camerata, with singer Nathalie Pires, are opening the night at Lincoln Center Out of Doors ...

Watch the trippy new video for Andorra’s “Indian Queen”

Andorra | Photo by Matthew Trycieckyj | courtesy of the artist

Local alt rockers Andorra shared a new video for their single “Indian Queen” last week. The song itself was first released in March and is the product of the band’s studio time at Philly Sound Studios, which they won during a battle of the bands competition.

The video starts off pretty low-key — the four-piece band is in a couple of different settings rockin’ out. Eventually though, the visuals take a bit of a trippy turn. Mirror images start taking over the screen, as if we’re looking into Andorra’s very own kaleidoscope. ...

Why is The War on Drugs’ Anthont LaMarca selling his guitar?

Anthony LaMarca | photo by Lisa Businovski | courtesy of the artist

Many musicians scan the likes of Craigslist on a daily basis, seeing what kinds of instruments and gear pop up around their city. For musicians in the Youngstown, Ohio, area, one 1969 Fender Jaguar stands out. And it’s not just because of it’s worn, vintage beauty.

It’s because it belongs to War on Drugs guitarist/keyboardist Anthony LaMarca. LaMarca plans to donate all of the money received from the guitar to those affected by Multiple Myeloma, a form of bone marrow cancer that he has been receiving treatment for. ...

We are all Evan Weiss in the new Into It. Over It. video for “No EQ”

Into It. Over It.‘s Standards is a contender for my Album of the Year, and I thank II.OI. mastermind Evan Weiss for making such a top-notch batch of tunes. I admire his songwriting ability. I am honored to live just a town over from where the Cherry Hill, NJ native grew up. But unlike the characters in the new video for II.OI. track “No EQ,” I have no desire to be Evan Weiss. Or go on a date Evan Weiss. Or even ...

Singles Club: The Donkeys

Sometimes it feels as though this oppressive, sweltering summer will be here always and forever. There are ways to combat the sweat, of course, such as cranking your air conditioning down to 60, installing a misting tent in your office…or having a listen to this here little gem.

A cover of the theme song to the classic surf flick The Endless Summer, let The Donkeys and their pastoral San Diego swoon transport you from a humid swampland to the tranquil, sun drenched beaches of 1960s California. Works every time.
