Kelly: Remembering innovative guitarist Bo Diddley’s time in Washington

Source: The Washington Post » Music

Bo Diddley used to live on Rhode Island Avenue and had a recording studio in his house. Where exactly was that? After a night doing sound for bands at DC9, I drive a long stretch of Rhode Island Avenue home. Often, I’m the only car on the street, and I find my mind wandering as I wonder “Is it that one?” I’m not gonna go knock on the door and ask for a tour. I just want to be able to give it a nod and a wink when I pass by.Read full article >>

Recap: Rusted Root @ The Ardmore Music Hall

Source: The Swollen Fox

Words and photos by Sara Patrick

This week has been a dreary one for Philadelphia. Slush is everywhere you look, and the cold wind has been ruthless…but all of this was forgotten inside the Ardmore Music Hall on Thursday night, because Rusted Root had returned to help us shake off the snow and bring some sunshine to the dead of winter.

For two hours the movement was nonstop. Sounds from all over the globe permeated the Hall; it was a fusion of Latin grooves and tribal rhythms, with everything in between thrown in. A suitcase full of percussive instruments—shakers, tambourines, ...

The night began with rap duo Run the Jewels, who brought loads of fun, energy and hype to kickstart the show. Atlanta-based Killer Mike and NYC native El-P blazed though tracks such as ...

New York City Live Music Calendar for February and March 2015

Source: New York Music Daily

Updated daily – you might want to bookmark this page and check back regularly to see what’s new. There’s a comprehensive, recently updated list of places where these shows are happening at New York Music Daily’s sister blog Lucid Culture.

Showtimes listed here are set times, not the time doors open – if a listing says something like “9ish,” that means it’ll probably start later than advertised. If you see a show listed without the start time, that’s because either the artist, their publicist or the venue in question sent incomplete info: those acts are usually listed last on a particular date. ...

The Untitled Interview #208: Starring Nate Nelson (White Violet)

Source: Fuzzy Logic

Some places just have something about them, something that lends itself to mass creativity of a horde of talented folks. North Carolina, pretty much the entire state, and Athens (Georgia, though the Grecian city is probably also fairly inspiring) seem to be two of those places. White Violet has ties to both, residing in Athens and recording recent LP Stay Lost in Carolina.

Nate Nelson is the mastermind behind White Violet, and contributes not only guitar but the comfortable, well-worn croon of the vocals as well. Read on to see what Nelson has to say about all manner of topical ...

Video Of The Day #32: Cotillon

Source: Fuzzy Logic

There’s a bunch of videos out there. Some of them are good. Some of them are a cut above. I like to think my picks for Video Of The Day are a cut (or two) above.

Sometimes it’s the simple images that are the most evocative. The visuals for the French New Wave loving Cotillon‘s excellent “Before” are not particularly fussy or complicated, but the halcyon, grainy shots of pastel Southern California scenes have an air of romance to them, and they speak to the wry love song angle so very well. The gritty, drone-like spell of the song ...
